I asked a seller (in a polite way) about their bubble statement necklaces and I got a message saying they were also PERFECT IMITATION OF J CREW NECKLACE. Bonus: they called me a ‘HATER!’ I giggled a little.
i really think you’re on to something, though, Petja. etsy would do well to allow resellers if they promise a free bonus handjob. that would cover the “hand” part!
This is just one of so many reasons I despise Etsy. I hate all the evil douchenozzles that let this ship sail so far off the map.
My heart goes out to all the legitimate makers of handbags, who have to deal with this jackassery.
Yeah, Etsy is a big enough company with enough staff and mods that they should be ashamed by this. It’s not even like this stuff is on the line (which a lot of stuff is), this is BLATANT and OBVIOUS as being the exact opposite of what handmade is. But that is mean and calling out you guize! It’s not creamy or adorebs at ALL
This really bums me out. I want a new handbag, a really hard-wearing expensive (is $200-300 expensive for a handbag? Looking at this I wonder maybe it’s not) bag, and I was looking to etsy. But I can’t tell whats handmade well, what’s handmade poorly and what’s handmade in sweatshops.
Ron Wayne from United America, Steaktown says: “Handmade bag for very good fun times! Rucksack for many cheers, always! Bag for holding many American hotdogs! I very loving most fashion-it bag of the moment!”
Finally! A bag large enough to hold the hundreds of hotdogs I eat in a single meal!! I’ve been sad so long for very fun good times place for hotdog. Me love it long time!
Nice organization, Helen.
The prices start out and then get more and more bloated until !bam! the (relatively cheaper) knockoff serves as punctuation. Like a cherry on top of ridiculous-ness.
If the Hermes bag is real, it’s completely handmade and that’s a reasonable price for a used one in new condition.
Meanwhile, people who take hours to crochet something are told that no one will buy them unless they’re priced to compete with cheap mass-produced schlock.
$8,888.00 is reasonable for a handbag? Really? Man, I don’t care if Jesus made it himself, I think that’s insane. Do people really buy handbags for that much money? If so, WHY? Does it do something regular bags don’t?
that Hermes is completely a fake….real Hermes bags do not buckle on the sides and fold in on themselves…they have a very riggid structure so they always stand up and keep their shape
Well, I do enjoy the parade of Back of the Van ‘R’ Us sales, I think that I would be okay with 50% authentic, as long as I can pay with 50% counterfeit money.
It would be refreshing for one of these to even be 50% handmade by the seller. A Frankenpurse, if you will.
Well, the Chanel bag could be hand made – doesn’t anyone remember those pictures of Coco sitting behind an industrial sewing machine in the middle of her Paris atelier?
What makes this even worse for me is that a legitimately talented designer, Chopstixwaits, passed away suddenly today. By allowing this crap to remain on their site, etsy is making a joke of the folks who really have talent and who are selling REAL vintage items. Shame on them…
Sorry this has taken so long, but you know the nature of “handmade”! haha Well, I just finished hand-tooling and dyeing the leather for your Michael Kors Floral Retro Handbag! Next step is casting the “MK” symbol in steel and chroming it, then adding the chain links and clasp. After that, all I have to do is hand sew the whole thing together with a liner inside, and do a final inspection. I really hope you’re happy with it, and don’t feel that you’ve overpaid your $70 (fingers crossed).
Did you know, helen that they are conducting a test on the front page (how many computers it appears on i am not sure, but many art sellers are losing sales over it)
they have removed the entire Art section from the front page, and stuck it under the barnwood homogenised category called “Home and Garden”
meanwhile this bag shit above is still clogging the etsy colon.
thats right Helen, they are HIDING artists who are in one of the largest categories (Art) on etsy
Did they explain why they’re shamefully hiding the hand-drawn art? I know there’s just tons of it and a lot is of middling quality but surely its not such a big deal?
I’m confused. I checked out the red Prada bag (re)seller’s shop, and she had this item for $240: http://tinyurl.com/8u4vdy2
And yet, at the bottom of that very listing, it says “Bag retails for $198 plus tax.” So is she saying that she sells at a higher price than Coach retail? Or is the bag more magickal now that she’s enchanted it with goddess aura or something?
I have to say, I’m almost glad that I do not make purses or bags, not because it’s a crap thing to do (it’s actually a great thing) but simply because seeing this would really make me upset and insulted. I mean, I’m still feeling insulted, and I don’t even HAVE a shop on Etsy. There is nothing more ridiculous than this, unless shops start selling Verizon phones and Coca-Cola and whatever else is the farthest away from vintage/handmade. (Oh God, Verizon phones and Coke are gonna show up now, I just know it.)
I have all of these bags already, when I was in the States last year, I paid $10.00 each for them at the local Sunday flea market that is loaded with Chinese sellers of every fake thing you can think of, I got lovely Tiffany Jewelry for $5.00 each.
But I think you can trust these guys to be selling the real thing, because you know they are selling on Etsy, which doesn’t allow re-sellers.
Does anyone have any connections with news agencies??
I don’t care if Chanel’s ashes are in that hideous thing, it’s disgusting horrible. Anyone willing to pay almost 3,000 dollars for that piece of crap deserves to lose almost 3,000 dollars and have that piece of crap.
Does anyone else use these posts as a smorgasboard of report this item/ report this seller? I take much delight in clicking over and reporting them all.
Well, all but the Prada bag have been removed. Seriously? Least they got most of it? It seems only when Helen posts shit like that on here does it get enough of an influx of reporting that something is done. Lame. I could do just bags alone for them from my house, but no. Wouldn’t wanna outsource things in cupcake land, since I’m not hipstery enough for them. I can spot a new bag, and a fake bag from a mile away.
that’s probably cos someone, more than one someone, forwarded them this post. but i betcha theres still tons more where that came from.
i wind up on the front page sometimes but cos of that, they watch my shop. i’m a good photographer, it’s nothing all that great. there is a flipside to it too, meaning: i get caught every single time some stupid little thing semi-sideswipes their rules. it’s really irritating cos none of my stuff is ever really very badly against them but, at least w/ me, they pick out the picayune every time. i can see why they might let a real chanel or prada or hermès stay up–theres a lot of handwork done on them [especially the hermès]. but the rest of the junk just boggles.
Most of these are probably conterfeit. The last one is for sure. They admit it!!? This is a HUGE problem here, and a crime. Not only are the real designers losing millions of dollars over this, but if every trailer trash Walmart weirdo has them, who wants them?!?! It takes away from it being a luxury item, thats for sure. That pink atrocity is awful, but all those people who are out amoungst us in their filthy pajamas would pay big bucks for that nastiness!
August 29, 2012 at 12:47 pm
PERFECT COPYCAT OF THE ORIGINAL really sells it for me.
August 29, 2012 at 12:53 pm
I would have opted for “Unique Copycat” – after all, it is “handmade”
August 29, 2012 at 12:59 pm
Handmade by Deja Vu Creations.
August 29, 2012 at 1:21 pm
I’ve seen what you did there. I think…
August 29, 2012 at 2:32 pm
Is that the name of an Asian sweatshop?
August 29, 2012 at 2:49 pm
No – that would be Deja Phu

Yeah, you know, haterz gonna… ask politely.
August 29, 2012 at 12:48 pm
Surely someone’s hands came into contact with these at the factory. It’s not a complete lie.
August 29, 2012 at 7:05 pm
well as long as you don’t find a hand in the bag you should be ok.
August 30, 2012 at 7:24 am
It’a a collective & they were shipped on a boat made of barn wood. What more do you/could you want!
August 30, 2012 at 1:48 pm
If they were handmade by hungry children, does that count?
August 29, 2012 at 12:49 pm
Oh, Etsy. Nothing you do surprises me anymore.
August 29, 2012 at 1:08 pm
Appalls, nauseates, enrages, sickens, infuriates and angers, yes. Surprises? No.

August 29, 2012 at 12:50 pm
My English is bad, but does this mean that if I buy an ugly home evening bag, they will make an added bonus to hand jobs?
August 29, 2012 at 12:53 pm
yes. yes they will.
August 29, 2012 at 12:56 pm
I’ll take the first three little bags
August 29, 2012 at 12:58 pm
i really think you’re on to something, though, Petja. etsy would do well to allow resellers if they promise a free bonus handjob. that would cover the “hand” part!

August 29, 2012 at 1:05 pm

August 29, 2012 at 1:15 pm

August 29, 2012 at 1:21 pm
The so-called family bags?
August 29, 2012 at 1:09 pm
Maybe I’ll be a big tote ..
I already have the small bags. Not quite three
August 29, 2012 at 5:18 pm
More than two?
August 30, 2012 at 1:49 pm
And less than four!
August 31, 2012 at 3:45 am
I will see if I can find a pic.
August 29, 2012 at 12:56 pm
That sentence was a joy to read!
August 29, 2012 at 7:54 pm
Trying to get a grip on this deal, Petja?
August 29, 2012 at 12:53 pm
Those are all totally handmade. By children. In third world countries. For pennies a day.

um. Just because it looks retro doesn’t make it vintage either. Dummy.
August 29, 2012 at 2:17 pm
Well it is two years old. Out of season is like vintage right?
August 29, 2012 at 4:19 pm
One year old is like ten years in hipster. So that bag is twenty years old.
August 29, 2012 at 12:58 pm
The great thing about shopping on Etsy is that all the money goes straight to the artists and designers, to help support their creative work.

For a Birkin, that’s actually a good price, and yes, people spend it! If I may translate to guy speak, it’s like the Lamborghini of handbags.
Still not vintage and not Etsy legal, though.
September 2, 2012 at 10:10 pm
Birkin bags usually go UP in price on the resale market. That one was a fake though.
