Thank you for that last one. The laughter completely deflated the futile rage that built up during the previous listings.
I need to go buy some of those racks. They work well for hats and the accordion action amuses me.
Ooo, smug time! We saved $298 at the !*fRee*! part of the second hand store last Saturday! And our rack is bigger, has an ‘aged patina of weathering’ and is (now) being upcycled in the yard! [ we had a clone of the "necklace" too, but the wood stove asked for it]
I’m sorry, I got distracted when you said your rack was bigger.
What I would have gone with for the “compare” item:
Yours would sound nicer but only if the sticks could be made into earrings.
Gives a whole new meaning to “Look at that rack,” doesn’t it?
Finally. I missed those.
The blanket typifies what bothers me about Etsy. Sure, it’s all hand-sewn. Clearly not by the seller, but what the hell does that matter? LISTING FEES!
This one was interesting, as there was a seller in the Etsy forums this morning complaining about her lack of sales – and she sells the exact same thing.
I find that anyone complaining about lack of sales in the Etsy forums is generally selling jewelry, hair bows, or photo prints.
Oh, and sometimes $4 a pop greeting cards.
And sometimes “vintage” handmade imported blankets.
Sometimes. But my point is that people think they’re going to be able to replace the day job they were laid off from with crafts made from the same pre-made components that there are literally 15,000 other sellers using.
I’ve been wondering this: Is it normal (no, not Etsy normal, real world normal) to sell small photo prints for $10 or $15 or more a pop? Or am I just cheap?
Depends on the photo. I actually sell some photos for $15-$50 depending, but they’re framed, etc… Not that I make a living on them, I barely break even on materials, not counting photo equipment.
Oh, who hasn’t needed a place to stash their bubble gum while standing on a high rise building wearing a bad wig??
Bjork’s lesser-known cousin, from the looks of the picture.
I know I haven’t. But then again, I lost my wig.
It’s quartz silly. That was the color of my hair and I shaved the sides of my head that are slowly but surely growing back.
I genuinely thought that it was studded with old chewing gum until I read the description. Both because that’s exactly what it looks like and because, thanks to Regretsy, I know how likely it is that someone would do that.
It looks like Cthulu or a Kraken puked up some ship wreckage on her. My mother is a maritimer with sometimes questionable taste, and even she would not wear or buy this.
Whoa, check out the Level 4 Tinkerbell baby in the vector Santa seller’s shop.
I find it adorable in spite of myself.
Don’t you mean in sprite of yourself?
It does look carbonated…
The magic of photoshop has really fizzled out for me.
I dunno…the image is a little pixie-lated.
why do the sparkles appear to be emanating from her diaper area?
That’s the bizness end.
That’s her Stinkerbell.
It’s fairy nice.
It is adorable, but 65 DOLLARS??? REALLY????
I didn’t even make it to the Tinkerbell Baby, I got sidetracked by ‘All That Glisters Is Not Gold’ in the first pic. If it’s glistering, ladies and gents, it’s probably not gold, but it might be herpes!
The creative thinking behind the necklace was as follows:
-Purple haired hipster gets drunk
-Purple haired hipster takes header into fence
-Purple haired hipster wakes up and is mortified
-Purple haired hipster internally justifies falling through fence by deciding that the Muses called to her in the night and demanded that she commit herself physically to her art
-Purple haired hipster needs $300 for cooking with kale classes
My thoughts were similar only involved getting trapped under a pile of deckchairs rather than a fence. I love that even she doesn’t know what it is; body armour, couture wall ensemble art, a necklace, all or none of the above.
Also, it has ivory in it? Urgh, like it was hideous enough without knowing it has bits of dead elephant in it. Even if it’s old ivory it’s still a horrible thing to include.
Under that pile of kindling she’s wearing a T-shirt that reads “I went to the beach and all I got was this lousy boardwalk”.

You have a great sense of humor. Have you tried stand up? It’s all of the above, as I designed and constructed it from completely upcycled materials. Ivory is beautiful and the flower was given to me after my grandmother passed away. She taught me how to sew and craft when I was 4. Which I’m sure is why I’m a couturier, designer & technical artist for a private women’s clothing label here in Los Angeles. I’m glad this is such a conversation piece! It’s actually been in several art shows and will be in two next week; one in Downtown LA & the other in Hollywood. Check out the Hive Gallery for August 8th & SKR Studios August 11th if you’re in town, where you can see if up close and understand that there are better things to do than hate on people who create things from scratch which is a dying art.
“understand that there are better things to do than hate on people who create things from scratch which is a dying art.”
No, there are still plenty of people who make things from scratch. Etsy is full of them. What’s dying off are people who are any good at it, as evidenced by your $300 pile of busted shit glued to other shit. But keep sniffing your own farts.
I’m not hating on you, I just think this piece is funny, it looks like the legs from deckchairs to me. If you make art then expect differing opinions on it and critics. I also make things from scratch and I don’t expect everyone to love my stuff and would probably be kind of insulted and wonder what I was doing wrong if they did.
I wasn’t trying to offend you, sorry if you took it that way, if I wanted to be rude I’d have sent a personal message or given you the link to here (who did that? come on, own up you mean thing). Honestly, getting butthurt over it will just garner more negative attention from trolls. I’m guessing one of them pointed you to this post to see if you’d get upset, which is not cool.
And I just don’t like ivory, it’s a personal thing, all I can think of is what happened to the elephant, it is beautiful to look at but it will always be an ugly, ugly thing to me.
Just because you made it doesn’t mean we aren’t going to critique it. Sorry, but Regretsy ain’t no kindergarten teacher. I have made some very bad art in my day, including some hilariously unwearable clothing. I threw it out, put on my big girl pants, laughed, and learned to improve my knitting techniques. It’s better to make good art than accept your work without questioning and improving it constantly. In fact, that’s what art is about.
So: real criticism. The idea of the piece is solid, actually. I like what you were going for, just not the implementation. The wood is not comfortably shaped and the sticking out bits detract from its natural shaping, as well as looking odd rather than daring. The way it would be worn looks uncomfortable and difficult to stay on. I understand couture, but sorry, this piece is just not well-engineered.
I’m no hipster, rather the person who’s inspired the hipsters to dig up the late 70′s and early 80′s around 7 or 8 years ago in SF as I grew up into Punk/Industrial. The creative thinking behind this project was based off of my BMI (Body Mass Index), where I made short film out of the entire process of making the necklace. Fortunately, I wasn’t drunk with the three weeks I spent making cuts, sanding, drilling, milling, etc. The quartz was a huge piece that I found in Santa Barbara, then broke up with a sledge hammer. The ivory flower was given to me after my grandmother died who taught me how to sew when I was 4. Hence is why I’m a designer and technical artist for a private women’s clothing label, and have two art shows in LA where I will be hosting my art in next month. I work incredibly hard to stay true to my art and break the mode. I am the muse, the inspiration. Get off the internet & come out Aug 8th Hive Gallery!
“I’m no hipster, rather the person who’s inspired the hipsters to dig up the late 70′s and early 80′s around 7 or 8 years ago in SF as I grew up into Punk/Industrial.” Translation: “I was hipster before it was cool”
If I came home with a $300 broken cup holder, my wife would garrot me with it, too.
Well, to be “fair” the Santa vector was converted from ai format to svg format. That took 30 seconds.
$6 X 2 = $12 per minute
That’s better pay than phone sex!
It depends on whether you go over your minutes.
Phone sex no, but phone math I could see doing, especially if it pays $12 a minute. Propositional calculus?
Yes, but IT’S SANTA WITH A HUGE SACK!!!
HA! Yes, but can the mug rack draw attention away from unsightly neck tattoos by showcasing your chewed up pieces of gum?
Quartz honey. Reading is very good on the brain.
You know what would be good on your brain? An anvil.
“Hand-made couture wall ensemble…”
This all makes me want to punch someone in the face.
There seems to be a distinct lack of understanding in the Etsy world of what the word “couture” means.
There’s a lot of confusion on the meaning of handmade & vintage, too.
Well, to be fair, “vintage” originally referred simply to the year the grapes for a particular wine were harvested. You can have a “vintage 2010″ bottle of wine.
However, we’re not talking about wine here.
Or indeed the word “wall”.
Couture is custom hand-made pieces, typically garments, usually made for a high-end clientele, yet not specific to only garments. I make beautiful custom dresses & wearable art (usually for fashion shows) that you can sarong on your wall!
Who wouldn’t want to wear wall art around their neck?
I made it to fit around your neck as a project to see what I could do with those specific materials based off of my body mass index. It took me weeks of making the cuts, drilling, milling, sanding. It’s gorgeous in person and I know the photographs don’t do it justice, but it will be at two more art shows next week if you’re in Los Angeles. One Aug 8th at the Hive Gallery in Downtown LA and the other Aug 11th at SKR Studios in Hollywood with some other non-traditional materials that I’m using. But I’m sure you’ll see the final outcome on my Etsy when you find time to gawk at art made by a humble, chill girl such as myself who prides herself in being involved in all design aspects from concept to finished product.
You know humility and pride are like opposites right? You can’t REALLY be humble and proud at the same time. Well, you probably can but it doesn’t make sense.
What do you mean by “based off your body mass index”? Like in what way does that statistic relate to the project?
The ‘handmade’ quilt comes with the permacreases from having sat folded in poly for a year at Anna’s Linens.
I’m disturbed by the lack of gears on the Steampunk Goggles.
I’m disturbed by the lack of steam or punk on the Steampunk Goggles.
These are the generic welding goggles most people at least try to paint or stick random stuff on before calling them steampunk.
And you can even replace the standard 50mm lenses with these laser-etched colored lenses, available in custom designs too: http://www.etsy.com/listing/95001749/etched-steampunk-goggle-lenses-2-50mm
Ooh. My steampunk loving boyfriend would dig those inserts. Thanks! Goes to show: trolling Regretsy results in positive yields.
I’m disturbed by the lack of clothing on the model in the Etsy post. She could have faced the camera and given a full frontal shot with some strategically placed gear cogs, moustaches, and maybe a crotch-grabbing octopus. Oh yeah, and the goggles.
The birdcages! It’s the SAME PICTURE! Damnit you made type in caps! I off now to sew til my fingers bleed and crmp up to make honest to goodness handmade items. Which will then be buried on page 40 of a search engine after all this crap.
This SNL skit always reminds me of the people who complain in the Etsy forums:
Wooden Necklace Wall Art Ensemble. I keep repeating it word by word thinking it will make more sense. I don’t know why I think it will.
For those visitors who just keep hanging around?
YAY!!! I had sent April a letter aaaages ago regarding those goggles.
“Handicrafts Industries” seems like an oxymoron. Who’s sari now?
The last time I squared off against my folding drying rack I took it down, but I spared its dignity by just walking away instead of taking a battle trophy.
I honestly can’t even decide which is the most shameless of these. I mean all the “digital collage” selling on etsy is obvious jacking of other people’s/out of copyright stuff, so I feel a bit numb to it.
The bird cages are basic reseller and the quilt is at least handmade by *someone*. I think it has to be the goggles. UNIQUE!!
Sorry but the math on the tag one is bothering me. The Etsy reseller is selling 100 for $15 and the wholesaler sells 1000 for 34.32 so shouldn’t you be saving $115.68?
Assuming you have to buy 1000 is the other way of looking at it but who went to all the trouble of looking at a bunch of stupid shit online and making a website that contains highlights and includes a forum for us to shoot off our mouths?
Since the Etsy listing is for 100 tags, I used that amount to make the comparison. If you break them down to cost per tag, the math is right.
The tags are $19 now. I guess with all the traffic, it means a 4 dollar price hike.
I love when they don’t even bother to take a new photo of the item, they just upload one directly from whatever site they’re reselling the shit from. Nothing says profit like being fraudulent AND lazy!
Its the goggles that got me. Because the seller goes to such great lengths to say they are speshul and unique in the listing… I just don’t know how these people live with themselves…
The lenses are perfect and both eyepieces look like new.
The black and blue elastic adjustable head strap feels like brand new – I doubt this pair of goggles was ever worn. This is an outrageous pair of goggles – the icing on the cake for any Steampunk wardrobe or a perfect biker accessory!”
Like new?? THEY ARE NEW!!! The icing on the cake? Yeah, if the CAKE IS MADE OF STUPID!
In case anyone else wants to report the goggles, this is a link to the goggles on the actual manufacturers website: http://www.hobartwelders.com/products/accessories/oxyfuel/
I hate people
Oh! Oh god! Did you see this in the goggle listing?

I need these goggles to keep my eyes from popping out at all the *Whotsefuck!* offered…
If the “like new lenses” don’t stand it, I could still paint with my eyeballs. Or has it been done before?
Thank you for the quilt one. I knew they were too good to be true but alas, I was almost convinced. The power of a cheap price + pretty pic + denial!
any day the scammy scummy edmdesigns gets called out on Etsy is a good one. They are a vindictive copycat reseller Ricky, and the only reason they are allowed to stay was that they were friends with an admin:
edmdesigns is quite disrespected in the real steampunk community of artists for their blatant reselling.
THANK YOU!!! meanface gogglehead is GONE!!!!!! I make shit out of old shit in my shop too and she wrote me a snarky condescending letters threat this year and it’s making my day that she’s gone. I’m a proud fucking FJL today.
thank you April for your great power.
Edmdesigns was gone from etsy for a couple days thanks to the goggles post but THEY ARE BACK WITH MORE and SAME GOGGLES:
AND THE welding goggles from amazon are back up too:
i thought etsy actually grew a spine for a day, looks like I was mistaken
Hey, that wooden cup rack looks really convenient! Thanks, Regretsy!
Just wanted to point out that the cup rack thing is now going for $350. Somehow I’m not surprised.
