Pocketwatch is the New Octopus

- This post originally appeared on Regretsy on May 3, 2011

Etsy promotes only a handful of very special sellers on their front page. Everything they promote is carefully vetted and returns no concerns, so you can shop with confidence!

Let’s look at yesterday’s handmade favorites!

What an awesome pocket watch! That must have taken forever to make. No wonder it sold so fast!

Don’t worry if you missed it. She has more.

And if she’s sold out, try these guys.

Of course, you may not be in the market for several hundred handmade mass-produced pocket watches. So if you’re only looking for one at a time, try this seller.

He may not have that exact handmade model, but he’s sure to have something equally unique!

Or you could just do a keyword search. With thousands of handmade pocket watches, you’ll probably find something.

UPDATE: one year and over 1,000 sales later, Tempus Fugit is still going strong. Re-selling like a motherfucker, and Etsy’s do-nothing “integrity team” just looks the other way. Because NO CALLING OUT, YOU GUYS.

You know what’s scary? My Mum sent me a pair of brass owl earrings for my birthday- they arrived today and I am wearing them because I love my Mum and she loves me and all that. But all I can think of whenever I pass a mirror and lovingly check out how amazingly gorgeous I am is that I look like a namaste bitch. DAMN YOU REGRETSY!!!

Wow… and this is POSITIVE feedback!

“Love it, except for a “MADE IN CHINA” stamped on the back of the watch that I had to look at every time I flip the watch over. This was NOT in the picture. I was able to scratch it off w/my pocket knife without scratching the glass, though, so it wasn’t too big of a deal. Still very happy w/my purchase.”

AHA! So THIS is what the crazy guitar lady was warning us about in her indie crafting warning! (comment in last item’s comments by Blackalabama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAOUWhgjvTg&feature=plcp ) She was warning us about paying good money for quality materials and taking the time to design and construct something actually handmade, when we could spend alot less by joining in the tidal wave of etsy rellers! Once again: she resell long time!

I had an uncle who was a watchmaker (for real, this was back in the 40s and 50s). We’ve still got watches in the family he made, and most of them work perfectly. When he got to the point he could no longer see fine-detail well enough to make watches, he took up repairing them.

If I were inclined towards doing nasty things, I’d call him up from the grave and have him go strangle this reseller.

I took a few hours out of my day and reported about 50 resellers of the same stupid owl pendant necklace and I contacted the sellers, too. Only received three responses from sellers. One actually claimed that alibaba.com stole her photos from her website. The other two were not American (English was not their first language. I could tell by the way their e-mails were written.) and told me because they attach the pendant to the chain, it’s allowed. I never did hear anything from Etsy and all those sellers are still there. It’s so frustrating.

The very idea that you could list a pocket watch as handmade in this day and age is absurd. You know how many processes go into making a timepiece? And then they sell it for TWELVE FUCKING BUCKS???

Craft has been completely devalued at this point. Nobody understands it, nobody seeks it out anymore. For someone like me who ACTUALLY MAKES STUFF, this is just absolutely soul-crushing. I need a fucking time machine so I can go back to when people gave a shit.

What is Etsy’s justification for “no calling out” again? Is it sort of like when someone calls a rape victim a “bully” for accusing someone of rape?

I mean, that’s the tacit justification, right? Calling out equals being mean, so they don’t allow it?

      In a nutshell, yes.
Although, to be honest, people have “called out” other people who didn’t actually deserve it. Closing the call out threads is understandable… NOT closing down an obvious reseller or rule breaker on the other hand…

You know, I am almost tempted to go and buy from an obvious reseller and then report them to the ACCC in Australia. I am wondering whether they could do anything, whereas Etsy won’t. Bastards opened up a brick and mortar ‘showroom’ in Melbourne earlier this year, and were trumpeting about the handmade ideology. Made me sick.

I’m going to go practice the Regretsy swearing list, here:http://www.regretsy.com/?s=swearingand cry into a large glass of vodka and vicodin.

More seriously, Regretsy has made me a better, more careful artisan; has given me better self esteem; educated me about kinky sex; and encouraged me to clean my house. (I’m not making this shit up.)
Seeing people like this, selling factory-made shit made of pure children’s tears, makes me angry on behalf of all the artisans better than me. Craftivism is getting some attention, and meanwhile, Regretsy is, for real, improving lives. Therefore, the only thing to do is grit our teeth and keep reporting them, create protest sites, and get drunk with dashingly handsome Finnish men whilst being served by lapdancing trans waiters wearing x-rated balloon hats. It’s what Jesus would do.

Etsy’s “integrity team” ceased to have any relevance when they changed their listing fee policy to cover multiples rather than billing a listing fee per item. If I list five original art works, it will cost me $1.00. If a factory has 1,000 of the same item and put it all under the same listing, they pay $0.20.
