New Game! (MNSFW)
A lot of people who read this site make samplers. I know, because I’ve bought them.
DON'T HATE
While the above pieces were made free-hand, patterns are often very important to the cross-stitcher. In fact, there are over 16,000 patterns for sale on Etsy right now (or 30, not counting Disney copyright infringements).
And so it was with great delight that I came upon My Photo Stitch; a website that converts any jpg into a cross-stitch pattern, for free!
It’s easy to do.
1. Select the image you want made into a cross-stitch pattern
2. Choose the size of the finished piece, and how many threads you want to use
3. Upload your image
Isn’t that fantastic?
IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES
Because I don’t believe in leaving well enough alone, here’s what we’re going to do.
Go to My Photo Stitch and upload your best idea for a sampler. Take a screen cap of the thumbnail, and leave it in the comments.
I’ll choose one I like best, and pay you to make it for me. The finished piece will take its place in our Pantheon of useless and upsetting objects.
But you don’t have to sew to play. If you come up with the winning pattern don’t do cross-stitching, I’ll give you $50 and pay someone else to make the piece.
It’s a win/win, except without the winning part.
NOTE: Patterns are purged from the system after about 30 minutes, so make sure you download yours or you’ll have to make it again if you win

Aw, damn. I make my own patterns by hand. Looks like my non-existant business just went out of business.
Though, I’ve been designing a 290×440 stitch map of Westeros for the past few weeks. Maybe I could just use this?

You aren’t out of business. This is for photo-realistic stuff only, and by its very nature the stitch counts have to be extremely high. This couldn’t work to make, for example, the House or the Judge Judy cross stitches above. It may be a starting point (I guess) but you’ll notice that all of the ones made from photos have a filled-in background, are blurry, and have no backstitching and very little detail. You can have a detailed piece that isn’t 11×14 inches if you chart it by hand.

Yep. Hand-charting gives a very different look and it’s one I think more customers will actually want. There’s a certain style and look to it that can’t be got with the photos.
Also, as mentioned, the photostitching takes a fuckton of thread.

Why thank you. I really did draw it on a piece of printer paper using a few different colors of sharpie marker… then I scanned it in and added the text with Photoshop. Then I googled for some other site that makes free patterns since the site linked in the opening post is down.

Thankfully I have my own software since the site isn’t working!
Will stitch on beige linen (or any other color you like for the background). I’ve done custom cross stitch designs before, so I can adjust colors as I go if the chosen ones don’t work as well in real life as on the monitor. I will also tweak the lettering at the top a bit to improve it – I’ve already fussed over it enough for today!
Finished size about 8″ wide, and I can custom mat it to fit in an 8×10″ frame. I’m also pretty good at mounting.
BTW, I have to give credit for this idea to my sister, KatP.

I know, way late. That’s my style. Apparently.
I would have loved to use my favorite comment about the subject video…it was something like “With my luck, I’d get the guy on the hammock who is too lazy to look for the magic button,” but this seemed to fit better. Pictured it in a bedroom. Maybe I should have made it long ways, and put the right side underneath Clarabelle…in position, sort of. Oh well, too late anyways.
