The Little Mermouse
Looking around here you think
That rat’s got everything
I’ve got bedding and water a-plenty
I’ve got wheels and seed treats galore
You want things to gnaw on?
I’ve got twenty!
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more
I wanna be where the mermaids are
I wanna see, wanna see them swimmin’
Splashing around with those – tails, I guess
The bottoms are fish, the tops are women
Down where they swim, having their fun
On a rock in the bay where they lay in the sun
They’re dolphin free – wish I could be
Part of that world

Do you mean Richard GERE and the urban legend of him and the GERBIL?
Please, people, get your urban legends and insertable rodents correct!
Thanks for your assistance in this matter.
I now return you to our normally scheduled fuckery.
May 7, 2012 at 8:26 pm
Rosey Grier? NFL, Secret Service, Crafter? Don’t fuck with him!
May 7, 2012 at 8:36 pm
I was thinking David Allen Grier.
May 7, 2012 at 9:37 pm
David Allen Coe??
May 7, 2012 at 4:33 pm
Rat costumes: For when dressing up your dog doesn’t send a clear enough message about your mental state.
May 7, 2012 at 4:40 pm
When you need a Halloween date and your mom won’t go with you, take a mermouse!
May 7, 2012 at 8:18 pm
Seriously… as if being at the bottom of the food chain wasn’t humiliating enough.
May 8, 2012 at 9:05 am
I don’t care what anyone thinks of my mental state, my dog will continue to wear her pirate hat.
May 7, 2012 at 4:33 pm
I used to think people that tried to dress their cats were insane. This person is more insane.
May 7, 2012 at 4:37 pm
I dunno, at least the rat goes back in a cage at the end of the day. Dress up a cat and it can exact revenge any time it wants, any way it wants.
It’s like trying to put a dress on a shark vs. sticking glingers on a starfish: one will probably just leave sucker marks, the other will devour your family.
May 7, 2012 at 5:05 pm
If your rat figures out how to open its cage though… well, then you’re FUCKED. That one isn’t a trick they ever forget.
May 7, 2012 at 10:27 pm
Seriously. And it seems like once they figure out how to open one type of cage door, they know to open every kind of cage door and how to get around any modifications you make to it to keep it closed.
May 7, 2012 at 5:56 pm
Battle of the Etsy critter Disney princesses! Litte Mermouse vs. Catahontas! My money is definately on Catahontas.
May 7, 2012 at 5:56 pm
As a cat owner who dresses her cat in sweaters in the winter, I can confirm and yet be hurt by your diagnosis.
May 7, 2012 at 7:48 pm
Sundresses in the summer or she goes au naturele?
May 8, 2012 at 5:17 pm
If your cat tolerates it, great. Unfortunately, my clients seem to think it’s really cute and will persist to the point of getting scratched and bitten my their cat trying to get clothing on. THAT’S insane. Do you have a sphynx?
May 8, 2012 at 8:22 am
I think I bought a rat-dress from this seller a couple of years ago. Her stuff is well-made and cute and realistically priced. If you like the idea of dressing up rats, which is just insane enough to make me drop a few bucks to attempt it.
We never did succeed in keeping the dress on. Then the rat died which is a shame because she was a very sweet and friendly pet. Now the rats we have are boys so they wouldn’t fit the dress.
May 8, 2012 at 9:16 am
I read that as “Then the rat died of shame”. I know mine would not have wanted to wear that!
May 8, 2012 at 10:06 pm
I am considering making a TARDIS rain coat for my corgi- I worry she’ll end up looking like this. A fuzzy, ashamed burrito.
May 7, 2012 at 4:34 pm
To a snake this looks like a burrito.
May 7, 2012 at 5:39 pm
Or Snake Sushi.
May 8, 2012 at 9:05 am
I’m thinking a Thai spring roll.
May 7, 2012 at 4:34 pm
I used to have pet rats and they would’ve probably bitten me if I’d done this. That said, I kind of want to get another rat and this outfit because I love it. And yeah, I am that person who bought a custom dog halloween costume. Insane, party of me (although how could I resist dressing my one-eyed dog as a one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people-eater? HMM?)
May 7, 2012 at 4:51 pm
I currently have three pet rats, and they would chew this thing to shreds in a heartbeat. Cute but not a practical use of my money LOL.
May 7, 2012 at 7:16 pm
Once, my Mom knitted her hamster a sweater out of love. Then it ate the sweater, choked, and died.
Somehow I see this tale ending the same way.
May 8, 2012 at 9:06 am
I’m surprised that this sweater isn’t edible. The ultimate recyclable.

I know, right? I added this shop to my favorites a while back (I love the devil horns) but I can’t imagine how I would get them to keep any of it on. They must be sedated.
May 7, 2012 at 10:31 pm
Actually, when I saw tis, all I could think was “Cool! Make it just a little bit bigger and it’s a ratty sleeping bag.” A couple of my rats LOVE sleeping in anything tube-shaped. Though, toilet paper rolls, socks and sleeves cut off of old sweaters are cheaper.
May 7, 2012 at 5:34 pm
I totally read that “HMM?” in the voice of Yoda.
May 7, 2012 at 5:46 pm
So funny. I was about to post the same thing
May 8, 2012 at 1:45 am
There is a definite need for a rat owner’s first aid kit here. Repurposed Might Mouse lunchbox with alcohol (drinkable or not) for the owner plus those band-aids with cartoon characters selected to match any rat costume. Tetanus shot (for the rat).
May 8, 2012 at 5:49 am
I’m also one of those “crazy” people! If I had a rat this outfit would not have made it here as I may have already bought it
May 8, 2012 at 7:13 am
Maybe s pirate-themed costume for next year.
Captain Jack Russell Terrier?
May 8, 2012 at 7:15 am
“a” for “s”. Rats! So to speak.
May 8, 2012 at 9:07 am
Just in time for Sept. 19!
May 8, 2012 at 8:26 am
We used to have pet rats.
I love mermaids, and collect them.
It never occurred to me to combine these two interests.
May 7, 2012 at 4:34 pm
Photographing the chimera over some shitty sea turtle quilt she bought at a storage auction is not enticing me to purchase that cock gown.
May 7, 2012 at 4:40 pm
The term *cock gown* reminds me of Bea Arthur for some reason.
May 7, 2012 at 6:28 pm
It gives me a wonderful idea for one of those design shows! That would be a don’t-miss episode.
May 7, 2012 at 4:41 pm
The mer-rat is swimming in the SEA! Duh!
May 7, 2012 at 4:35 pm
Rats. There went my best idea; who ratted me out?
May 7, 2012 at 4:35 pm
I think Walt Disney should make a sequel!
May 7, 2012 at 4:37 pm
A squeakel!
May 7, 2012 at 8:03 pm
I foresee a problem, in as much as rats can swim, but they need all four paws free to do it. So basically, by putting a mermaid outfit on it, you’re guaranteeing that Squeaky is going straight to Davy Jones Locker.
May 7, 2012 at 8:26 pm
So now it’s a Pirates of the Caribbean sequel?
May 7, 2012 at 8:48 pm
Pie rats.
May 7, 2012 at 4:36 pm
“Merrats are what’s in.”
Oh, ok.
May 7, 2012 at 6:47 pm
When I read “merrats” I assumed this was a clever bit of taxidermy. I was so disappointed when I realized it was just a costume for a rat.
May 7, 2012 at 4:36 pm
I tried singing this, but that second verse…it’s not right. The 4th line shouldn’t be there. /pointless comment
May 7, 2012 at 4:37 pm
“it sometimes takes a few tries before some rats will keep their clothing on”
= we advise you to be up to date with your tetanus shots.
May 7, 2012 at 4:40 pm
Take out the word “rats”, ask the guy next to you for any noun and you’ve got yourself a funny Mad Lib.
May 7, 2012 at 4:40 pm
I think you’ve carved out a new job for yourself, April! Start working on that voice.
May 7, 2012 at 4:41 pm
I definitely just sang that song. Loudly.

You gotta love first world problems.
May 7, 2012 at 5:00 pm
It is soooo hard to find tiny rat sized tube tops. What a headache!
May 7, 2012 at 7:35 pm
Try the fetishwear section.
May 7, 2012 at 9:45 pm
Before I clicked that link I was hoping you were joking, then I kinda hoped the shop really head a fetishwear section, then I clicked the link. Thank goodness you were joking.
May 7, 2012 at 9:45 pm
@had
May 7, 2012 at 5:03 pm
There are first world problems, and then there’s the difficulty of training your pet rat to wear its mermaid costume.
May 7, 2012 at 5:09 pm
I guess that explains why there is such an over-population of them.
May 7, 2012 at 5:15 pm
Do you know how difficult it is to make mermaid costumes on such a small SCALE?
May 7, 2012 at 5:30 pm
That’s why she charges more than a fin for one!
May 7, 2012 at 6:21 pm
Definitely more than I’m willing to shell out.
May 7, 2012 at 5:38 pm
I sea what you did there. That was abyssal. You too, MD.
May 7, 2012 at 4:58 pm
Shit shit shit, I need this. I hope I get it the second they come back from vacation. MY RAT WILL LOOK SO FINE IN THIS.
May 7, 2012 at 5:17 pm
samanthasue, will your rat look this fine?
May 7, 2012 at 8:33 pm
Hell yes, only she’s a girl. So more like this:
May 7, 2012 at 8:52 pm
Rats are so dear… My brother wanted one and my mom said “EEEEW, NO WAY” but then she eventually gave in, then fell in love with the rat, got another one, accidentally wound up with several babies, and ultimately became the lady who would wander around the house with three or four of them nestled under her hair.
May 7, 2012 at 4:58 pm
I can’t even imagine how deep into learned helplessness that poor model rat must be. If I were to try to pull this shit on any of my own rats, they’d shriek their heads off, and while none of them have ever bitten me for any reason, I can’t say I’d blame them if they decided then to set a precedent.
I really hope no one buys this thing and attempts to get it on a rat in the hopes of making it swim.
May 7, 2012 at 5:52 pm
I dress my hamsters up, and none of them have an issue
May 7, 2012 at 6:07 pm
For a moment, I thought you were being featured.
May 7, 2012 at 6:33 pm
me too!!
May 7, 2012 at 9:41 pm
I am a proud owner of one of Anna’s dino hamster costumes! I just wish Perkele wasn’t too fat to wear it:(
May 8, 2012 at 6:44 am
I gave you a thumbs up just for naming your hamster Perkele.
May 8, 2012 at 10:15 pm
Why are there no good plus-sized dinosaur hamster clothing boutiques?
May 7, 2012 at 6:33 pm
One of my girls will scratch my arms off before letting me do that, the other lets me put her into terrible things, like an easter bonnet. XD
May 7, 2012 at 4:58 pm
It’s really cute and I think that if we ordered them in bulk, they would SO brighten up the NY subways and landfill areas.
Hey, does anyone know if a rat dresses to the left or the right? Te seller might need that information, if she comes out of hiding and takes her shop out of “vacation.”
May 7, 2012 at 5:16 pm
Neither, I’d think. The sheer bulk of these animals’ testicles pretty much closes the door on any hope of pants-wearing. They’d need kilts.
May 7, 2012 at 5:21 pm
Or skants.
May 7, 2012 at 5:06 pm

May 7, 2012 at 5:18 pm
I did too, actually. And I think I might’ve been even more tickled by it that way.
May 7, 2012 at 7:14 pm

Wild rats, yes. Tame, domesticated pet rats, not so much.
May 8, 2012 at 9:22 am
Pet ratties groom and clean themselves as much as cats do. They are no more or less “ewww”-worthy than any other domestic rodent… and smarter than most.
May 8, 2012 at 11:49 am
I prefer my pet rats to most disgusting horrible humans.
May 8, 2012 at 10:20 pm
I’ll give it to you that domesticated and wild rats are two different critters, but after I gave up raising hamsters and had to trap an inordinately large and trap-smart rat that saw an open window on a hot day as an invitation, I don’t want any rodent in my house. Plus my dog has already done in four mice from the yard, so I’ll let you ratty lovers keep your little friends… so long as they’re kept away from me.
May 7, 2012 at 5:30 pm
Looking at this again and going through the photos, I really can’t express just how disappointed I am that the costume doesn’t have six little shell bras on the underside.
May 7, 2012 at 5:31 pm
This type of thing would work better on a ferret.
May 7, 2012 at 8:48 pm
Yeah, but if they disapprove of something, they simply hide it so you’ll never find it again.
May 7, 2012 at 5:37 pm
May 7, 2012 at 5:43 pm
Have you ever heard of that thing where holey textures freak people out? Trypophobia? I have that and the white part of the costume makes me want to shake my wrists and freak out. Eeeek!
May 7, 2012 at 7:31 pm
There’s a name for it? In certain circumstances it freaks me out, too. My skin is crawling thinking about what I saw the other day that made me creeped out. It was actually food.
May 7, 2012 at 9:54 pm
Oh god do I have that. My mom made something for dinner the other day that had okra in it (not sure if that’s spelled right but there’s no way I’m Googling it) and I’m not fully recovered yet ;(
May 7, 2012 at 10:01 pm
Okra. Yes. And just make sure your Google safe search is on. It’s just a grody vegetable, not a blue waffle.
May 8, 2012 at 9:23 am
Okra is awful, I don’t blame you. And it’s slimy. Really gross. I never liked okra. Ever. One day my sister said, “Oh, Mugsy, you haven’t tried okra the way I make it!” Oh, really? ‘Cause unless the way you make it is to throw it all away and never mentioning it, I’m not going to like it.
Someone posted a “lazy dinner” idea on FB: Slice up hotdogs and then poke a dozen or so thin spaghetti in each and boil. A close-up photo of the result. Still makes my skin crawl.
May 7, 2012 at 6:07 pm
Who are we kidding? Someone is gonna put that in their ass.
May 7, 2012 at 6:24 pm
Ummm I actually dressed up a pet rat once for a Halloween photo contest… You can call me crazy if you want, but I won some cool stuff!
May 7, 2012 at 7:08 pm
That is wicked cute! I now have Tiny Dancer in my head. At least I can fall asleep to that.
May 7, 2012 at 7:59 pm
It’s cute! It’s like it is dressed up as Angelina Ballerina.
May 7, 2012 at 6:28 pm
Um, can we get April to sing the song? Or to do another Regretsy Theatre!?
May 7, 2012 at 6:30 pm
I know I’m the minority here, but I have bought things from mischiefboutique for my rats, and I love her stuff.
She sends cookies with your purchases! My rats love them!
I probably love my rats more than I should :p
May 7, 2012 at 6:49 pm
They love the cookies and not the purchases, I’m sure. :p
But really, there’s no such thing as loving your rats too much (as long as no one’s getting hurt).
May 7, 2012 at 10:43 pm
Oh, I totally signed up to be notified when she returns. I don’t even have any rats any more. But, as soon as my kid is old enough to realize that yes, they are real live animals, not furry, squeaky toys, I will have some again and I am quite fond of the idea of them being a well dressed bunch.
Ya know, I crocheted and sewed toys and hammocks and blankets and all kinds of things for my ratties. It never once occurred to me to make them clothes and take adorable pictures of them. If you start when they are fairly young, I could see some rats thoroughly enjoying the attention.
May 8, 2012 at 7:58 am
I’ve tried making and buying hammocks for them, they end of more bent on destroying them than using them for what they’re intended lol.
May 7, 2012 at 6:52 pm
Looks more like a shrimp than a mermouse. Mmm. Mouse Tempura!
May 7, 2012 at 6:54 pm
Mouse Scampi!
May 7, 2012 at 6:58 pm
I say that if you’re paying for a pet’s room and board, the least it can do in return is sit still for a minute while you dress it up and take adorable photos.
I have a dream of making Snake Pajamas and selling them on Etsy.
May 8, 2012 at 9:24 am
Make ‘em footed, just for the irony.
May 7, 2012 at 7:07 pm
Damn!! Over the past 3 weeks my cat brought me a mouse and either a vole or a shrew (my rodent knowledge is limited). They were in “near mint” condition (assuming broken necks but cat wasn’t talking & I didn’t touch). I’ve just realized that I’ve missed out on the chance to sell taxidermy merrodents or, even more exciting, mummified merrodents! Danm, damn, and damn again!!
May 7, 2012 at 7:23 pm
Well, now you know for the future. Be prepared!
May 7, 2012 at 7:30 pm
If Etsy ever asks, you can just send them the video of
kittehdragging in today’s catch.May 7, 2012 at 9:54 pm
Yes. You’ll also want to include your kitty’s name in your shop for collective verification purposes.
May 7, 2012 at 7:55 pm
The cat is most appreciative of the binding…er, wrapping.
May 7, 2012 at 7:58 pm
My cats would just think I wrapped up dinner for them.
May 7, 2012 at 9:38 pm
My sisters keep snakes. The snakes won’t eat frozen mice, so they have to get the live ones. They get them at a pet shop and the mice come in a little cardboard box that we call a “happy meal.”
May 8, 2012 at 9:25 am
My friend has snake and WON’T feed them live mice. She warms up the frozen ones in the microwave…and I’m going to tell her about your sisters’ “happy meals.”
May 8, 2012 at 6:46 pm
My daughter buys “mice cubes” and warms them in warm water like a baby bottle.. it doesn’t damage the enzymes in the mice and adds the small amount of water that is held in the fur. Live feeding is so very dangerous for the snake..
May 7, 2012 at 8:10 pm
Wow… hours into this post and not a single Flotsam and J’Esty pun. It’s as if no one else worshipped at the Little Mermaid altar.
I feel so alone.
May 7, 2012 at 8:22 pm
I almost choked on my capri sun when I scrolled to that picture……I am a crazy rat lady, I show rats and they compete in costume contests…I have had a mermaid, woodland fairy, tinkerbell, a ballerina, a southern bell complete with a corsette and hat with long blond curls, a butterfly, a caterpillar, a princess, a flower in a pot, a turtle, a crab, and I even once dressed a hairless (naked) rats up as malibu rattie (barbie) with a pink glitter bikini. the kids love it at shows but I would never think to try and sell it on etsy or that anybody would want to buy it!!
May 7, 2012 at 8:40 pm
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE post pictures!! I especially want to see the caterpillar, crab, and flowerpot.
How do you get yours to tolerate the costumes? This post got me to try squeezing one of my own rats into a little Mulan outfit earlier and she just kept taking my fingers and the dress and shoving them away.
May 7, 2012 at 10:32 pm
it takes very specific rats to tolerate the costumes, I usually use boys they are fatter and much calmer some costumes attacher to bands that went around them or their head went through it, others like the southern bell had staps and lace up corsette with a ball gown bottom so you had to hold them up right in it. I will have to look and see it has been quite awhile since I have done a show and I am the photographer so I don’t think I have any of my own in pics, I should take some though I have some of the news articles I will have to look and see if I can find…..seattle times did a whole story about us once then used a princess that was another persons rats, we all laughed:-)
May 7, 2012 at 10:50 pm
I have a bunch of pics in a word file, was going to share but I can’t figure it out!!! grr I don’t have any rat pic down loaded that are in costumes I can’t take the photos of myself. if anybody knows how to post those I will
May 7, 2012 at 8:38 pm
When Mickey walked and Minnie swam
Who then was the amphibian?
May 7, 2012 at 8:55 pm
“Mermin” would be a better name because it covers both rats and mice.
May 7, 2012 at 9:20 pm
According to the seller, “Due to unforeseen health complications, the shop is being shut down for the month of May as we work on getting caught up on our back log of orders. Please check back next month when we will be reopened for business.” FJL’s, unite!
May 7, 2012 at 9:59 pm
I’m glad there’s a back log of orders. There’s obviously more crazy rat people that we ever thought.
And if the shop has gone into vacation mode because she’s embarrassed about being featured here, then she’s really not reading the comments. I hope that’s not it.
May 8, 2012 at 7:52 pm
Maybe she got the plague!
May 7, 2012 at 10:24 pm
My granddaughter was crying the other night and I asked her what was wrong. She said, “My hamster cut me!” I said, “WHAT? Why did he “cut” you?” She said (still crying loudly), “I don’t know! I was just trying to put a Barbie dress on him!”

http://www.facebook.com/#!/topi.rats this is a breeder and she has amazing photos, she does a ton of photos with props, not quite a costume but honestly it takes way more talent to get them to hold on to a scooter and sit for a photo then then to wear a costume!!
May 8, 2012 at 8:01 am
Omg the tutu! Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!
May 7, 2012 at 11:24 pm
I wanna be where the merrats are…
I wanna see, wanna see ‘em craftin’…!
May 8, 2012 at 1:50 am
Am I really the only one who finds this pretty cruel? It’s a living creature, not a doll.
May 8, 2012 at 1:58 pm
Eh, depends on the animal. Some of them are OK with costumes, others not so much. No one’s advocating forcing an animal into a costume but we need to be careful not to project our feelings onto them. Just because we’re bothered by it doesn’t mean the animal is.
May 9, 2012 at 3:59 am
I guess I belong to that group of people that think animals shouldn’t have to wear clothes if it’s not necessary (ie to keep them warm etc.) I dislike the thought of dressing up an animal just for funsies. I’m sure *some* animals don’t mind, but eh, I think it’s cruel. And that mermaid costume looks really uncomfortable, too.

OMG! The fabric behind the mer-rat….I made curtains with that for my daughter’s room when she was in 3rd grade!! They were awesome. Sigh. Now she’s a teenager lurking in her basement room.

finds it cruel??? um no I don’t just cram any rat into an outfit, you have to pick rats that are gooey and squishy and have been handled since birth and actually like the contact. my rats will walk around in the out fit and don’t even care!!! they are not kep in the out fits andtrust me if a rat does not want to wear clothes you are not going to get them in an outfit!!

Well, you’re entitled to your opinion. As am I, and I think it’s cruel. No reason to get all butthurt about it.

aw nuts she’s on vacation – I wanted to check out if she was the seller with the startling rat wedding dresses I came across a while back!

Can’t see myself wanting to get our girls into an outfit (no way they would let me anyway!) – though I teased our current old lady that she’d look perfect in a victorian bonnet. Oh lord I can see a strange rat-costume-steampunk combo on the horizon……

Talk about reinventing the wheel, think the episode was even called “The cat and the mermouse”

“What fish you got that isn’t jugged?”
“Rabbit.”
