The Little Mermouse

Looking around here you think
That rat’s got everything
I’ve got bedding and water a-plenty
I’ve got wheels and seed treats galore
You want things to gnaw on?
I’ve got twenty!
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more

I wanna be where the mermaids are
I wanna see, wanna see them swimmin’
Splashing around with those – tails, I guess
The bottoms are fish, the tops are women

Down where they swim, having their fun
On a rock in the bay where they lay in the sun
They’re dolphin free – wish I could be
Part of that world

I dunno, at least the rat goes back in a cage at the end of the day. Dress up a cat and it can exact revenge any time it wants, any way it wants.

It’s like trying to put a dress on a shark vs. sticking glingers on a starfish: one will probably just leave sucker marks, the other will devour your family.

Seriously. And it seems like once they figure out how to open one type of cage door, they know to open every kind of cage door and how to get around any modifications you make to it to keep it closed.

I think I bought a rat-dress from this seller a couple of years ago. Her stuff is well-made and cute and realistically priced. If you like the idea of dressing up rats, which is just insane enough to make me drop a few bucks to attempt it.

We never did succeed in keeping the dress on. Then the rat died which is a shame because she was a very sweet and friendly pet. Now the rats we have are boys so they wouldn’t fit the dress.

Rats are so dear… My brother wanted one and my mom said “EEEEW, NO WAY” but then she eventually gave in, then fell in love with the rat, got another one, accidentally wound up with several babies, and ultimately became the lady who would wander around the house with three or four of them nestled under her hair.

I can’t even imagine how deep into learned helplessness that poor model rat must be. If I were to try to pull this shit on any of my own rats, they’d shriek their heads off, and while none of them have ever bitten me for any reason, I can’t say I’d blame them if they decided then to set a precedent.

I really hope no one buys this thing and attempts to get it on a rat in the hopes of making it swim.

I’ll give it to you that domesticated and wild rats are two different critters, but after I gave up raising hamsters and had to trap an inordinately large and trap-smart rat that saw an open window on a hot day as an invitation, I don’t want any rodent in my house. Plus my dog has already done in four mice from the yard, so I’ll let you ratty lovers keep your little friends… so long as they’re kept away from me.

Okra. Yes. And just make sure your Google safe search is on. It’s just a grody vegetable, not a blue waffle.

Okra is awful, I don’t blame you. And it’s slimy. Really gross. I never liked okra. Ever. One day my sister said, “Oh, Mugsy, you haven’t tried okra the way I make it!” Oh, really? ‘Cause unless the way you make it is to throw it all away and never mentioning it, I’m not going to like it.

Someone posted a “lazy dinner” idea on FB: Slice up hotdogs and then poke a dozen or so thin spaghetti in each and boil. A close-up photo of the result. Still makes my skin crawl.

Oh, I totally signed up to be notified when she returns. I don’t even have any rats any more. But, as soon as my kid is old enough to realize that yes, they are real live animals, not furry, squeaky toys, I will have some again and I am quite fond of the idea of them being a well dressed bunch.

Ya know, I crocheted and sewed toys and hammocks and blankets and all kinds of things for my ratties. It never once occurred to me to make them clothes and take adorable pictures of them. If you start when they are fairly young, I could see some rats thoroughly enjoying the attention.

They were in “near mint” condition (assuming broken necks but cat wasn’t talking & I didn’t touch). My daughter buys “mice cubes” and warms them in warm water like a baby bottle.. it doesn’t damage the enzymes in the mice and adds the small amount of water that is held in the fur. Live feeding is so very dangerous for the snake..

I almost choked on my capri sun when I scrolled to that picture……I am a crazy rat lady, I show rats and they compete in costume contests…I have had a mermaid, woodland fairy, tinkerbell, a ballerina, a southern bell complete with a corsette and hat with long blond curls, a butterfly, a caterpillar, a princess, a flower in a pot, a turtle, a crab, and I even once dressed a hairless (naked) rats up as malibu rattie (barbie) with a pink glitter bikini. the kids love it at shows but I would never think to try and sell it on etsy or that anybody would want to buy it!!

How do you get yours to tolerate the costumes? This post got me to try squeezing one of my own rats into a little Mulan outfit earlier and she just kept taking my fingers and the dress and shoving them away. :(

it takes very specific rats to tolerate the costumes, I usually use boys they are fatter and much calmer some costumes attacher to bands that went around them or their head went through it, others like the southern bell had staps and lace up corsette with a ball gown bottom so you had to hold them up right in it. I will have to look and see it has been quite awhile since I have done a show and I am the photographer so I don’t think I have any of my own in pics, I should take some though I have some of the news articles I will have to look and see if I can find…..seattle times did a whole story about us once then used a princess that was another persons rats, we all laughed:-)

Eh, depends on the animal. Some of them are OK with costumes, others not so much. No one’s advocating forcing an animal into a costume but we need to be careful not to project our feelings onto them. Just because we’re bothered by it doesn’t mean the animal is.

I guess I belong to that group of people that think animals shouldn’t have to wear clothes if it’s not necessary (ie to keep them warm etc.) I dislike the thought of dressing up an animal just for funsies. I’m sure *some* animals don’t mind, but eh, I think it’s cruel. And that mermaid costume looks really uncomfortable, too.
