PEOPLE ARE AWESOME

One of the great things about Etsy is that it affords any vulture with marginal talent the ability to make a few bucks on the back of tragedy.

So today, as the nation is reeling from one of the most shocking verdicts in recent memory, let us exploit a dead baby with some neat stickers and bad felt marker drawings.

Bonus points for NO portion of the proceeds benefiting the victim or any child abuse charity!

The fact that people waited until the day of the verdict, three weeks AFTER she died, makes it seem like they’re leaving the porch light on to celebrate getting away with murder.

It takes way less effort to click “like” on facebook’s event than to go to the store, buy a candle, attend a rally, remember you left your lighter in your other hoodie, and get a light from someone else. Hell, you don’t even have to flip on your light. It’s not like the facebook event police are gonna come check.

I admit, I did the porch light thing, too. But to be fair, we also had a 50 mph dust storm sweep through the city last night so I don’t think the candle would have lasted long.

Anyway, I do have a nightly candle lit for all the children who have died through domestic violence, and have done so for the past five years. It’s my own quiet tribute that no one else will probably ever see, but I don’t care. Personal reasons.

What ever happened to looking out for children in your own community that might be victims of abuse and doing something about it?

Oh, I forgot: that would take time, money, effort, and risk. Lighting a worthless stupid fucking candle or flicking on the porch light is a cheap, effortless way of showing how much you care about being seen as a sympathetic person, without doing anything worthwhile to help anyone.

        July 7, 2011 at 7:16 pm

Keep judging people, there, Blurgle. Especially not knowing a thing about the circumstances people might be under that might just prevent doing anything more than lighting a cheap, fucking candle. Maybe they’re working 15 hours a day at two jobs, desperately trying to support themselves and a disabled member of their family (as I am), and hey, maybe they aren’t even able to spend more than $15 a year on work clothes so they only have one pair of pants to wear (as I have).

Yep, yep, keep on judging those who would love to return to volunteering at the animal shelter, but can’t because of the aforementioned 2 jobs which take up all but a few minutes of the day. Throw that sanctimonious attitude at those who used to be able to donate goods to the battered women’s shelter, but can’t now, since, ya know, they don’t have any clothes themselves.

Well, keep being a total assbadger and I may just shove my cheap-ass fucking candle up where the porch light don’t shine. M’kay?

AbbyCat, I deeply admire and respect your reasons for the candle thing, especially since you don’t make a huge public deal out of it. I think Blurgle was referring to the people who are only doing it for attention. Like, the ones who will lose interest even before Nancy Grace finds another big news story to coin a nickname for. I figure he meant the ones who are making a scene about their “mourning” since expecting praise for giving just enough fucks to flick a switch is the trendy thing to do right now; not the people who actually care.

And while I find it all appalling, it’s her job to rally interest in true crime cases…just like all of the other reporters, both conservative and liberal. But, then, she doesn’t agree with your political stance so you’re going to see things the way you want. *shrug*

People are awesomely horrible. And stupid. I was the foreman of a jury once, and my fellows could not understand the difference between ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’ and NO doubt. They thought they had to have absolutely no doubt in order to convict. In cases like Anthony’s, I wonder if this is what went on with the jury.

The right to a jury is a damned important right. The power of the jury is huge and vital.

The time and efforts spent educating the jury about their power and responsibilities is minuscule.

The legal system as it stands relies on our lack of understanding. An educated jury is much harder to sway.

But people like this who are looking to make money off of this. Disgusting. I don’t care how poor I ever get I’m not going to use the death of a child to make money with my craft.

A lot of what I’ve heard about this case and several others in the news lately is that we, as a nation, have become so CSI-ed that we want not just circumstantial evidence (which is still totally valid evidence, ask Scott Peterson), but we want to see complete forensic evidence before we think someone is guilty. It’s partly because we’ve become conditioned by most true-crime shows that the killer always slips up and leaves something connecting him/her to the crime, and partly because there are a lot of people sitting in jail who were convicted on circumstantial evidence that turned out innocent (not all, but some).
The lack of forensics or time/place/concrete method of death is what really sank (possibly subconsciously) them with a jury that may watch any CBS prime-time show.

This annoys me soooooo much. I remember this one case, the wife (who was trying to be the ex) disappeared. No evidence other than that her car had been missing while his truck sat in front of her new house. Husband says “She ran off to Mexico with her lover.” Almost NO physical evidence, not even a body. The main evidence? He, a cop, had said he could kill someone and hide the body and no one would ever find it. They convicted him. 10 years later someone found the body. Even though they have it, and have DNA proving it’s her, he still maintains that she is alive and in mexico with her lover.

Probably too serious, but the comments about the jury brought to mind an opinion piece that I read that made a case for why jury duty is not something you should try to get out of – not sure what the rules are in the US, but here your company can claim you are irreplaceable or something along those lines, and you can be excused – which generally results in a more “educated” group getting out of duty. This results in juries who do not necessarily possess the breadth of reasoning that would do complex cases justice (I’m trying to not say “stupid”, bear with me.)

It certainly changed my view on what I would do if called up…

I wish it was that easy. I’ve had Jury Duty twice. You can be excused if you can show that by attending Jury Duty it would place an undue financial burden on your family. I was able to be excused once because I was VERY pregnant. but you can also only due it once.

My mom got called up. After hearing most of the trial, one of the other jurors, who happened to be suing the state and should not have been eligible for duty, told the judge that she was refusing to listen to the defense. She was excused. The jury hated the dude who sued the state and actually acquitted just to get away from him (one hour before the judge was going to call a hung jury). 6 months later they found PICTURES of the defendant committing the offense.

Gotta love being 6 and having to field calls from Hard Copy and reporters stalking your mom because she’s the only one who refused to interview. Gotta love people saying your mother is a horrible judgmental bitch who hates the justice system and is the reason a murderer went free.

Quite frankly, having a rational person on the jury doesn’t help if everyone else there is a friggin moron.

This one is donating $5 of her $44.95 price tag to Child Help. Which at least something is being donated, but I make rosaries myself and wouldn’t think of using her name as an excuse to make money. Call me cynical but it seems more like a “if I donate a small amount using Caylee’s name more people will buy” ploy. Can she not just sell the rosary and donate money to Child Help without putting Caylee’s name on it?

I’m not usually a fan of reactive legislation, but if there isn’t already a law for that, it does seem like a sensible idea – provided the age limits were worked out properly for what was a “child” and there was a sensible timeframe (so you didn’t end up in jail because you didn’t pick up the phone within five minutes).

I can’t sign the petition as I don’t live there.

I’m writing to propose that a new law be put into effect making it a felony for a parent, legal guardian, or caretaker to not notify law enforcement of the death of their child, accidental or otherwise, within 1 hour of said death being discovered.

Also, make it a felony for a parent, legal guardian, or caretaker to not notify law enforcement of the disappearance of a child within 24 hours, so proper steps can be taken to find that child before it’s too late.

Some people need a serious kick in the taint. I’m all for capitalism, but people like these ass-jackals makes me want to maim people with my knitting needles.

An innocent child was murdered and they think it’s a good idea to profit off of it? They are just as heartless as that egg donor who took the time to keep the party spirit going for a month, but couldn’t be bothered to call police and file a report that her own child was missing. At least she isn’t profiting off her soulless indifference…yet.

Not meaning to offend, but the prosecution really did not present adequate evidence for a murder 1 conviction. In fact there was a great deal of reasonable doubt about whether she was the killer at all, or whether it was someone else or an accident.
I suspect Casey as well, but this is the way the justice system is designed to work.
Also, Casey’s lawyer was a fucking moron.
