Perfect for the bride who plans to tie one on at the reception! Or, if a guest shows up without a tie, no need to send him home— just pull one off the gown and join the party!
Actually, I can appreciate the work that goes into a dress like this; I’ve worked with ties on a smaller scale and they’re a pain in the butt to prepare. Kudos for the workmanship. But as a wedding dress????
*shrug* C’est la vie and to each his own.
this dress looks like the bride had a bunch of hookups with all of the groom’s buddies and kept their ties as souvenirs…
“hey, look at me! i banged 42 dudes, and all got were these neckties”
I think this is pretty neat. I would never wear it as a wedding dress and I probably would never buy one, but if someone handed it to me and said, “Please model my tie dress,” I would totally wear it.
Oh sure, the one with the subdued patterns looks all nice, but wait til you place your order and it’s nothing but golf-club patterns and Looney Tunes novelty ties.
I kind of like it, too, honestly. I wouldn’t get married in it, but I could see wearing it to someone else’s wedding, or to some other semi-glamorous party.
Not for a wedding, but it’s kinda cool. I could see myself owning it. (not for $400 though. Dollar tie rack at Goodwill, sewing machine, zipper … why is this 400 bucks?)
I think its actually an interesting dress, although I definitely don’t see wedding gown. I think she’d get along much better with it if she marketed it as just a plain, albeit interesting, dress.
Hi everybody, *hic* I just wanted to say a few words about the bride and groom. When Chad told me he was going to ask Calliope to marry him, I said, *hic* that’s great, man, she’s a great girl, you’ve totally got that Dharma and Greg thing happening. But then I started hearing about the ties. All over her house. Wrapped around the bedpost, stashed in her sock drawer, hanging from the chandelier. Well, family, friends, I asked Calliope about the ties, and she invited…
If they are recycled men’s ties do we get the full effect. The coffee stain, the mustard stain, the sweet and sour stain, the cigarette burn hole, greasey spoon food stain?
me back to her house to see them. You know how serial murderers save a little souvenir from each person they…well you know, I don’t want to spell it out at a wedding. Turns out, Calliope does the same thing, only, she didn’t exactly kill these guys. That’s my tie, center, back. You may think I should have stood up to object, knowing what I do about her collection, but I can’t because I know Chad is going to be the happiest man alive–practice makes perfect, after all. But dude, stay away
you can get 2nd hand ties from goodwill for 1$ each or like someone else said the dollar store. but its not 400$ its 495$ that’s going to be well over 500$ after shipping costs, for some used ties a zipper and some thread.
and why does the model have a pained look on her face?
And the wedding – not Mendelssohn’s Wedding March… the bridesmaids entered on the theme from “Tie me up, tie me down,” and the bride, “Tie me kangaroo down, sport, tie me kangaroo down…” Recessional: that fine old hymn, “Blest be the ties that bind.”
#22 moi: “I think she’d get along much better with it if she marketed it as just a plain, albeit interesting, dress.”
If she marketed it as a regular dress, she couldn’t charge as much. The wedding markup on *everything* is a minimum of 50%, usually 100-200% (or more). It’s a cute enough dress, but forgetting it for a wedding, and figuring in the aggravation factor of working with ties? It’s not worth over $100, if that.
Of all the “art” I have seen on Regretsy, this artist actually created art that is aesthtically pleasing. Although it might be more interesting with some Cheese Whiz lids and spark plugs…
I don’t hate it. It looks like the result of a Project Runway challenge…. “Designers, raid your dads’ closets and create an elegant evening look. You have until midnight tonight. Make it work!”
I think the dress really is creative not sure about why it cost what it does or what made her think wedding dress. What I really want to know is WTH is she pointing at. Is she casually pointing out some one has a tie that matches the dress?
I’ve worked with ties like this before and they really lay a lot better if you open them up in back before stitching them together. They always seem kind of bulgy when they’re sewn together intact.
As a wedding dress? Hells, no. But a more subtle knee-length skirt (you know, as subtle as you can get when you’re wearing a skirt made of ties)? Sure.
Stretch, yes, we do have a Men’s Warehouse in MA…LOL
And all I hear are those awful commercials in George Zimmer’s deep annoying voice…hahahaha
While we’re at it, any other Massholes here? I also hate the Bernie and Phyl’s and Jordan’s furniture commericals.
That is all.
I’m reminded of this advice Nick Verreos gave, regarding auditioning for Project Runway:
“DO NOT bring a “Skirt made out of ties” or a “Dress made out of ties”, or ANYTHING made out of ties. Tim Gunn (and myself) wanted to reach for the nearest barf bag any time someone walked in with any of those. It’s not creative.”
#11 Calophi :
I think this is pretty neat. I would never wear it as a wedding dress and I probably would never buy one, but if someone handed it to me and said, “Please model my tie dress,” I would totally wear it.
Well, it IS being sold, and it IS being sold as a wedding dress. Therefore, the criticism of this being sold as a wedding dress seems valid. Is it well-made? Yes. And it’s made out of fucking neckties. If this was a Project Runway challenge, awesome…
You know, I like this too! I wish she had made a hem though instead of leaving the tie points at the bottom. It kind of gives it away that it is made out of ties. Which it is. And people know that. But, well, this could have been cool.
I think this is pretty neat. I would never wear it as a wedding dress and wouldn’t buy it, or model it, but if we were living in a post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland and all my clothing had been burned off and I couldn’t find any garbage bags or old tents, I would totally wear it.
I kind of love it as a regular dress. I hate it as a wedding dress. I’ve been meaning to make a skirt like this for years, and I think that would be a lot better than a whole dress. Less is more and all.
I’ve been collecting yard sale ties for a while to make some stuff with my daughter for her to wear and a quilt. You get some really nice quality silk that way, plus there are some gorgeous fabrics used in men’s ties.
It is a LOT of work just prepping the ties for use (but I open them up and flatten them – more fabric that way).
We got the idea from a friend who made a really cute vest out of ties. This is not the best example of recycled ties that I’ve seen.
#51 – you mean Behn-nie and Phyll’s fin-a-cha? Mass is about the only place where you keep your socks in a draw — and drawer is what you do with a pencil on paper…
It’s okay. I like the idea. The model seems to be in pain though, which only makes me think that wearing this dress must be uncomfortable. Like wearing three regular, skin-tight dresses. It would be bulky and thick with no movement or fluidity.
When I imagine getting married I imagine pant suit or actual flapper dress (not that DARE monstrosity Wilma brought to our attention, how old was the model? like 12?). You’d want something you can feel comfortable/unconstricted in.
#67 Bronc…. maybe I’m just drunk, but that comment seemed a little cracked-out. Maybe it didn’t make any sense and so people thumbed accordingly? (please don’t kill me)
You know, this dress actually looks really nice. I have a friend who made a skirt out of old ties and its the coolest thing ever. Yes Im big into innovative fashion…but I DRAW THE LINE AT USING THIS AS A WEDDING DRESS.
Seriously. Prom even, sure. Not wedding, talk about tacky.
Hourglass shape? She doesn’t have any shape in that dress. And why does it have to be a wedding dress? I mean, we all made tie skirts and tie vests when we started sewing in high school and wanted to be cool, but we never planned on wearing them to our weddings. C’mon.
Ok, that’s it, I’m wearing this as my wedding dress when I get married in front of Cheezus. (One of this seller’s skirts kept showing up in a search I had been running on Etsy, and it’s been making me sort of want to recreate it. I like the concept. I agree that while a cute funky idea- although not particularly original, it is not a wedding dress, though.)
I live in MA, but grew up in midwest, where people are boring but DARNIT, AT LEAST THEY SPEAK NORMALLY (tongue in cheek). Drives me crazy that folks take r off words that need them and stick them on words where they don’t belong.
Question: Why do people seem to just LOVE thumbs-downing all positive comments? Why are we censoring people who dont have the same opinion as us? Is this a regretsy sanctioned idea, truely?
Here’s something that kinda bugs me though… why are we willing to pay tons of money for a painting or sculpture (that in actuality could have taken far less time and accuracy than creating an original pattern, collecting the materials, and putting them together to create an item of clothing) while we whine about price when it comes to an artistic piece that happens to be clothing? It is much less common to hear people make the same arguments about fine art
(e.g. “oh I bet this person only paid $5 for materials and it only took a few hours to make”) Humans really are completely irrational illogical creatures who have deluded themselves into believing otherwise.
One thing I really like about this is that so many tie-dresses/skirts/vests/skants/whatever are done straight up and down. I like the way she sort of swirled them, it’s almost elegant.
#86- I hardly call clicking a thumbs-down button “censorship.” Especially when you can un-hide the comment. (Btw- does anyone else automatically read the fucking “hidden” comments? I hate to admit it but I cannot help myself.)
OH! I knew the images seemed really familiar! They’re local to me!
Some of those actually are really rather nice. But I’d never wear one as a wedding dress. o.O
I kinda like the dress, but I imagine that its a heavy dress, and being strapless, I could see it sliding down down down during the obligatory wedding chicken dance.
man, people are getting SOFT on here. You should have seen the hits I took for defending some poor chick with dreads who was getting more degrading comments about her hair than the item we were supposed to be making fun of. It was funny (the bashes on me)! It’s all in good fun. I would find this place SO boring if I agreed with everyone.
Vile & Evil- I just read it. Brilliant.
I tend to thumbs-down anything that makes me roll my eyes. Or is wildly off-topic. Or anyone who says “first” or advertises anything.
Or, unfairly perhaps, almost anyone who adds “action” to their comments in parentheses. For example: “(rolls eyes, walks away from desk)”. It’s very aol chatroom.
CarlsFreakinPool @2: I like it too. It reminds me of a vest I had in the early 90s that had ties and lace sewn on it. I may have to go hunting for ties in the thrift shop and make myself a dress this summer.
If you made a tie-dress for a Project Runway challenge you’d probably get kicked out. They’ve been mentioned several times on the show as cliches of pseudo-innovative design. I wouldn’t put this dress in the same category as Cosmic Cougar, because it looks decently made, but it’s not as brilliant as it thinks it is and it’s definitely way overpriced. So yeah… still fair game for Regretsy.
Sorry, but clothing (vests, skirts, and aprons are more common, but whatever) made from ties are objects of derision even among the hopelessly WASP-y and fashion-challenged quilting-ladies set.
If I’m generous, I could see a shorter version as a humorous cocktail dress, but the wedding dress is just too off-kilter.
I actually like it. I don’t own – and (probably) never will own – anything made entirely of ties, but I had this “cool and unique idea” when I was young for a tie skirt that I never made. (Yes, I know, it was never cool and never unique. Shut up.) As someone above said, at least it is pretty, unlike most stuff here.
But come on. Why all the hate on non-traditional wedding dresses? My wedding dress is red and copper. We don’t ALL have to get married in some giant white…
#110- my wedding dress was dupioni silk in a golden color. I had a taxidermied bird wing in my hair. I don’t think people are pro-traditional here for weddings. Just anti-bad craft project.
#115: I agree in principle, but…I hear words like “wedding appropriate” or “weddingish”, even on here, and wonder why. I don’t see why weddings need things that are ‘weddingish’ or ‘wedding appropriate’ (what does that even mean?) so I have to ask – why are people on regretsy, which I’ve lurked on for awhile and loved (both the goods and the comments), saying it? A few people on here like the tie dress, so why is it so crazy to consider wearing it at a wedding, if you’d wear it…
@119: I think a girl at a wedding doesn’t want to wear something that looks just interesting or something that they just look good in… at weddings, women want to look stunning… likely because of all the work and money they put in for this “perfect day”. I far from agree with it but societal norms are what they are… it’s hardly surprising that something like this wouldn’t measure up to the fairytale wedding many women envision…
… I don’t even think the seller would disagree – it is just a good excuse to put a higher pricetag on her product. (Another detestable thing about weddings).
Love this as a party dress, just not as a wedding gown! I may have to make myself one If I added some ties for straps I could wear it to church…yes, I’m odd and I know it.

March 10, 2010 at 4:49 pm
Hourglass shape? She doesn’t have any shape in that dress. And why does it have to be a wedding dress? I mean, we all made tie skirts and tie vests when we started sewing in high school and wanted to be cool, but we never planned on wearing them to our weddings. C’mon.
March 10, 2010 at 4:50 pm
Oooh I actually really like this one http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=41226980
March 10, 2010 at 4:51 pm
Agreed, this is so high school Home Ec. project. It’s not creative. It’s not cutting edge. It’s fucking neck ties…..Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz….next.
Tie Died.
March 10, 2010 at 5:24 pm
This dress bores me. But I love her shorter tutu party dresses.
March 10, 2010 at 5:41 pm
Raz, Masshole, bwahahahaha! I haven’t heard that in ages! Don’t forget the wonderful “Bob’s Discount Furniture” commercials!
March 10, 2010 at 5:55 pm
Ok, that’s it, I’m wearing this as my wedding dress when I get married in front of Cheezus. (One of this seller’s skirts kept showing up in a search I had been running on Etsy, and it’s been making me sort of want to recreate it. I like the concept. I agree that while a cute funky idea- although not particularly original, it is not a wedding dress, though.)
March 10, 2010 at 6:37 pm
OK, I love the “Draw v. drawer” thing!
I live in MA, but grew up in midwest, where people are boring but DARNIT, AT LEAST THEY SPEAK NORMALLY (tongue in cheek). Drives me crazy that folks take r off words that need them and stick them on words where they don’t belong.
Sort of like verbal gender reassignment surgery.
March 10, 2010 at 6:41 pm
This would make a better ugly-bridesmaid dress.
March 10, 2010 at 6:43 pm
Meh. Not interesting, not an interesting color. And some of her stuff is downright fugly.
March 10, 2010 at 6:44 pm
Are there any men out there who recognize their old ties?
March 10, 2010 at 6:45 pm
” #73 Eruanna :
Oooh I actually really like this one http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=41226980 ”
That one’s not bad, she actually did more than just sew ties together edge-to-edge. You actually can’t tell at first glance what it’s made of.
March 10, 2010 at 7:20 pm
This is pretty cute just absolutely wrong for a wedding dress.
March 10, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Question: Why do people seem to just LOVE thumbs-downing all positive comments? Why are we censoring people who dont have the same opinion as us? Is this a regretsy sanctioned idea, truely?
March 10, 2010 at 8:26 pm
yep, this is Halloween perfect
March 10, 2010 at 8:29 pm
Here’s something that kinda bugs me though… why are we willing to pay tons of money for a painting or sculpture (that in actuality could have taken far less time and accuracy than creating an original pattern, collecting the materials, and putting them together to create an item of clothing) while we whine about price when it comes to an artistic piece that happens to be clothing? It is much less common to hear people make the same arguments about fine art
March 10, 2010 at 8:31 pm
(e.g. “oh I bet this person only paid $5 for materials and it only took a few hours to make”) Humans really are completely irrational illogical creatures who have deluded themselves into believing otherwise.
March 10, 2010 at 8:35 pm
One thing I really like about this is that so many tie-dresses/skirts/vests/skants/whatever are done straight up and down. I like the way she sort of swirled them, it’s almost elegant.
March 10, 2010 at 9:22 pm
#86- I hardly call clicking a thumbs-down button “censorship.” Especially when you can un-hide the comment. (Btw- does anyone else automatically read the fucking “hidden” comments? I hate to admit it but I cannot help myself.)
March 10, 2010 at 9:37 pm
I’ve gotta say.. that’s a pretty damn cool concept.
March 10, 2010 at 10:01 pm
OH! I knew the images seemed really familiar! They’re local to me!
Some of those actually are really rather nice. But I’d never wear one as a wedding dress. o.O
March 10, 2010 at 10:03 pm
I kinda like the dress, but I imagine that its a heavy dress, and being strapless, I could see it sliding down down down during the obligatory wedding chicken dance.
March 10, 2010 at 10:32 pm
@UnaBee, I ALWAYS click to view the hidden comments. Always.
March 10, 2010 at 10:57 pm
man, people are getting SOFT on here. You should have seen the hits I took for defending some poor chick with dreads who was getting more degrading comments about her hair than the item we were supposed to be making fun of. It was funny (the bashes on me)! It’s all in good fun. I would find this place SO boring if I agreed with everyone.
Now gimme some thumbs’ down NOW mothafuckas!!
March 10, 2010 at 11:02 pm
mtopia, have you ever found a COMFORTABLE wedding dress? They generally are heavily boned and several layers thick.
This dress looks like it could use some boning.
The dress. Not the model.
Eruanna, refer to my thsis on red-thumbing here, comment #88 http://www.regretsy.com/2010/03/04/silence-of-the-cans/
March 10, 2010 at 11:04 pm
‘Thesis’ that is. This is why I’, still in the remidial Regretsy classes, lickin’ the windows on the short bus.
March 10, 2010 at 11:27 pm
95, Me too. It is either an opportunity to rush to someone’s defense or to scoff. I’m good with either.
March 10, 2010 at 11:29 pm
Well-made ans decent: yes
Over-priced: yes
Wedding dress: no
Wear to work in the men’s department at Macy’s: DEFINITELY!
March 10, 2010 at 11:31 pm
Oh, and 97, I hope never to find a wedding dress comfortable or otherwise. I meant what I said about the pant suit!:)
PS: Your avatar scares me so much, but I find it hard to look away. The eye is hypnotic.
March 10, 2010 at 11:31 pm
Vile & Evil- I just read it. Brilliant.
I tend to thumbs-down anything that makes me roll my eyes. Or is wildly off-topic. Or anyone who says “first” or advertises anything.
Or, unfairly perhaps, almost anyone who adds “action” to their comments in parentheses. For example: “(rolls eyes, walks away from desk)”. It’s very aol chatroom.
March 10, 2010 at 11:33 pm
There could be an exception though if it’s creative. “(spontaneously rejects previous meal with such force, is rendered unconscious)”
March 11, 2010 at 12:20 am
I also like the red and black tutu-type dress. I’d want one in Hogwarts’ house colors, though! Wish I could sew. . . well. Well, sew at all, actually.
March 11, 2010 at 12:33 am
CarlsFreakinPool @2: I like it too. It reminds me of a vest I had in the early 90s that had ties and lace sewn on it. I may have to go hunting for ties in the thrift shop and make myself a dress this summer.
March 11, 2010 at 12:40 am
Hmm… question:
Is this a “tongue in cheek” dress – a tie for every man the bride has slept with before finding THE ONE?
March 11, 2010 at 5:55 am
If you made a tie-dress for a Project Runway challenge you’d probably get kicked out. They’ve been mentioned several times on the show as cliches of pseudo-innovative design. I wouldn’t put this dress in the same category as Cosmic Cougar, because it looks decently made, but it’s not as brilliant as it thinks it is and it’s definitely way overpriced. So yeah… still fair game for Regretsy.
March 11, 2010 at 7:05 am
okay, maybe not for a wedding dress – but I kinda like these – http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=20923426
March 11, 2010 at 7:09 am
Sorry, but clothing (vests, skirts, and aprons are more common, but whatever) made from ties are objects of derision even among the hopelessly WASP-y and fashion-challenged quilting-ladies set.
If I’m generous, I could see a shorter version as a humorous cocktail dress, but the wedding dress is just too off-kilter.
March 11, 2010 at 8:22 am
I actually like it. I don’t own – and (probably) never will own – anything made entirely of ties, but I had this “cool and unique idea” when I was young for a tie skirt that I never made. (Yes, I know, it was never cool and never unique. Shut up.) As someone above said, at least it is pretty, unlike most stuff here.
But come on. Why all the hate on non-traditional wedding dresses? My wedding dress is red and copper. We don’t ALL have to get married in some giant white…
March 11, 2010 at 8:30 am
#100 I had a friend who worked at Macy’s
He like to let people know he worked in Women’s Shoes
March 11, 2010 at 10:50 am
and the other wedding dress isn’t bad either, still not really wedding appropriate though…
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=28195038 – I like the way all the ties on this one are solid.
March 11, 2010 at 12:44 pm
#112- I think that one looks more weddingish but still a no.
March 11, 2010 at 6:52 pm
Personally, I really like this. It’s unusual, that’s true. And very pretty, in the non-conventional sense.
Still, would I pay $500 for it? Definitely not.
I could get all the ties I want here at the Salvation Army or Idaho Youth Ranch thrift stores for much less.
March 11, 2010 at 7:52 pm
#110- my wedding dress was dupioni silk in a golden color. I had a taxidermied bird wing in my hair. I don’t think people are pro-traditional here for weddings. Just anti-bad craft project.
March 11, 2010 at 9:22 pm
“#100 I had a friend who worked at Macy’s
He like to let people know he worked in Women’s Shoes”
Hahaha! Did he also tell people he worked in Women’s Lingerie too? HAHA! Wait…I hope that was a joke…
March 12, 2010 at 8:47 am
Weren’t skirts made from ties in a few years ago? I remember seeing college girls in them. And tie belts, too.
March 12, 2010 at 9:38 am
#115: I agree in principle, but…I hear words like “wedding appropriate” or “weddingish”, even on here, and wonder why. I don’t see why weddings need things that are ‘weddingish’ or ‘wedding appropriate’ (what does that even mean?) so I have to ask – why are people on regretsy, which I’ve lurked on for awhile and loved (both the goods and the comments), saying it? A few people on here like the tie dress, so why is it so crazy to consider wearing it at a wedding, if you’d wear it…
March 12, 2010 at 9:40 am
By “at a wedding”, I do mean as the bride by the way. I wouldn’t because I don’t like it enough but if someone does – hey, it’s not ugly. Why not?
March 12, 2010 at 1:58 pm
Crunchy Chicken wore a dress like this recently for an event:
http://www.thecrunchychicken.com/2010/02/sneak-premiere-preview.html
March 14, 2010 at 11:53 am
@119: I think a girl at a wedding doesn’t want to wear something that looks just interesting or something that they just look good in… at weddings, women want to look stunning… likely because of all the work and money they put in for this “perfect day”. I far from agree with it but societal norms are what they are… it’s hardly surprising that something like this wouldn’t measure up to the fairytale wedding many women envision…
March 14, 2010 at 11:56 am
… I don’t even think the seller would disagree – it is just a good excuse to put a higher pricetag on her product. (Another detestable thing about weddings).
April 17, 2011 at 8:58 am
Love this as a party dress, just not as a wedding gown! I may have to make myself one
If I added some ties for straps I could wear it to church…yes, I’m odd and I know it.
