I Won’t Throw Up

- Submitted by XXXLittWear

The idea that this woman sat at her kitchen table, night after night, hand drawing thousands of frames and painting them, and filming them, then making two entirely handmade DVDs by hammering thin sheets of plastic and coating them with silvered metal, and then hand etching both discs with an exacto blade . . . well, I just think this is the kind of shit we should be supporting.

Looks like Etsy has been shamed into removing the item…

Incidentally, as to the first editions I linked above, here’s what they’re SUPPOSED to look like:
    http://collect2sell.wordpress.com/2007/03/20/identify-a-true-1st-edition-%E2%80%9Cto-kill-a-mockingbird%E2%80%9D/

To Kill a Mokcingbird is EASY to ID the first because it SAYS it right on the front page. Not “24th printing” like the ones linked above advertised as first editions.

Thing is, a lot of the time we can go around flagging our asses off, and nothing gets done.
What else is sad are all the crafters/artists out there in Etsyland who can’t come up with thier own designs and start producing knock off Disney, Hello Kitty, and other products. Not to mention all the knock off celebrity merch ie; Lady Gaga, Marilyn Monroe, Audry Hepburn…
Thing is, Etsy’s policy is to not do anything until the owner of the copyright sends a cease and desist order…

    Thumb up Thumb down +14

  89. WrathOfFoamy

Check out thier copyright policy, it’s a load of bullshit! These big companies aren’t going to waste the money for the legal fees to get Etsy to remove the offending items. http://www.etsy.com/copyright_policy.php

If you want to help get the knock-off crap off of Etsy, send a few of the big companies emails, or letters with links to some of the unlicensed merchandise on Etsy. It may sound pointless, but the few who speak do so on behalf of countless others who wont!

In order for someone to buy this, someone would have had to search for it on etsy. How did the seller believe that this would go unnoticed? Etsy is such a cool idea, but this really lessens that for me.

If just having an old movie on the DVD makes that DVD “vintage” even if I had just bought it brand new, then I better go and list all my classic movies! I’ll be rich!

God I’m so sick of people trying to manipulate Etsy’s TOU.

I sent her a convo suggesting she move over to ebay, this is the response I got:

Thanks for your input. You should do a DVD movie search of all items and you will come up with over a hundred of actual DVDs. I did, that’s why I listed mine. Blessings, Kathie, NebraskaKnitter

the funny thing is, i took her advice and looked.
most of the items that came up were instructional dvd, that were at least applicable to the handmade essence of etsy.

#108- I don’t care if everything else in her shop is dipped in gold, who wants to support someone who lists such shit?
Speaking of shit, can we please ignore hidden due to douchey-ness? It’s like someone stepped out of an aol chatroom circa 1995 looking for attention. This is my last statement on this cretin.

#118- Wasn’t it the most passive-aggro “blessings” ever or what. As far as etsy, it’s depressing. I had a few days where I thought about switching to BigCartel or Dawanda or something, but I decided to just let my shop speak for itself and sit it out awhile longer. I know that listings like these make money but even from a purely capitalist, bottom-line perspective, Etsy is going to suffer in the long run if their reputation tanks.

I sent her another message saying:

Just because other etsy sellers are violating the TOU, she could too?

    response:
There’s Eagle DVDs, WWII DVDs, New Orleans DVDs, Horror DVDs, Kids movies DVDs, and lots more. That’s the ONLY reason I listed my movie, since I found so many DVD movies, I thought it was okay to list them. Blessings, Kathie

    sigh…………..

This shit pisses me off. When I first joined Etsy it was for artists and artisans, before they allowed vintage stuff and supplies…and the fact that they allowed vintage stuff is the reason, I think, that people take advantage of the site and post shit like this or sale, because they think that they can sell these kinds of things just by slapping the word “vintage” somewhere in the title or description.

    *sigh*

    *steps off soapbox*

#22: She’s just not getting it. It’s not enough that DVD’s exist on Etsy. You have to look at *what’s ON* those DVD’s. Home-burned historical photographs, art or craft tutorials, royalty free stock pics, someone with handsewn baby wraps which include DVD’s on how to use those wraps. Stuff like that. Unless Peter Pan is going to give a tutorial on poaching green-dressed faeries and smothering them in tiny bottles, her DVD is not Etsy.
