Thanks a lot, Helen. I think I got in trouble at work for stifling snorts of laughter when I should be working. The hat is bad enough. The picture with Captain Kirk? Priceless.
As if the ugly wasn’t bad enough, she stole the basic principle from the Fall issue of Interweave Knits (although, to be fair, the designer in that case stated she took inspiration from a runway designer, so perhaps this is just an homage to an homage)

My grandma knit me something like this once. I think she just figured out how easy it was to make pompoms and just kind of took it to extremes. Only she would probably have died (again) at finding out that she could sell it for so much on etsy.
My mom had a plastic device to actually make yarn pom-poms like this. You would wind the yarn around and around and around and then cut the sides.
A serious question does ‘mod’ mean actual new and fashionable today or things that look like retro shit from the early 70′s when ‘mod’ was first used to describe such things.
actually, I just noticed the seller is from warsaw.
The wall has only been down 20 years, not everyone has had a chance to get on board with spirit of the west.
Diane von Furstenberg is the famous designer someone mentioned above who did this hat – for Fall 09. Not sure how to post a pic, but if you google “diane von furstenberg pom pom hat” you’ll see it in the images…It’s every bit as tribble-riffic as this Etsy one. But probably costs a crapton more. Making this one seem like a deal at $75!
I live in a tiny rural community. I think I shall knit a hat like this (my mom has the pom pom device in her knitting stash) and wear it to the Feed-and-Seed to pick up rabbit chow.
Did someone throw a bunch of furbies into a branch shredder ??
What a poor waste of materials – we will see unhappy rich bitches wearing these all over cause they’re as popular now as in 2009 when done by Diane von Furstenberg
If my grandmother did that to a hat, then we would have her committed. Luckily, she knitted slippers… and if she had done that to the slippers (which did have poms), then we would have had her committed.

I can’t be without it!

When the brain tumors get that big, it’s time to do something about them.

The look in the model’s eyes says it all.
January 8, 2010 at 1:50 pm
I can’t be WITH it!
January 8, 2010 at 1:51 pm
the models expression says it all.

Work those Gribbles girl! She’s fierce.
January 8, 2010 at 1:55 pm
So that’s where all those Koosh balls from the 80s went.
January 8, 2010 at 1:56 pm
Hat not recommended for Klingons.

Sorry, my fault. Link works now.
January 8, 2010 at 1:58 pm
You can barely see her aluminum undercap, what for all the Tribbles.
January 8, 2010 at 2:00 pm
she looks resigned to having to wear it, like its some sort of punishment. or she bet on texas and lost, so she has to wear the tribble hat.

I would wear this hat too. R.I.P. Grandma.
January 8, 2010 at 2:01 pm
Ah, there it is! I love a lot of her other things also. She’s got more of these hats!
January 8, 2010 at 2:02 pm
Ack – more “scarves”: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vl_other_1&listing_id=32282319
January 8, 2010 at 2:04 pm
I have four dogs and four cats. I’d be terrified they’d rip it off my head to play with it.
In Tribble-related news, that was always one of my favorite episodes.
Stop calling me a nerd.
January 8, 2010 at 2:05 pm
Even Kirk looks puzzled.
January 8, 2010 at 2:14 pm
I love fuzzy balls; I don’t love this hat.
January 8, 2010 at 2:17 pm
“Ok, who put the tribbles in the quadrotriticali?”
Best Star Trek line ever. And now we know the answer.
January 8, 2010 at 2:18 pm
the trouble with this hat goes way beyond the tribbles.
January 8, 2010 at 2:19 pm
‘Fuzzy balls’ #22 Efit…wait, there’s a teabagging joke in there somewhere, I just know it.
January 8, 2010 at 2:25 pm
Needs moar of these too:

Perfect for the lady who loves hairy balls on her head.
January 8, 2010 at 2:30 pm
75 bucks for yarn pom-poms? da hell?
January 8, 2010 at 2:30 pm
My favorite Trek episode is now a hat! But does it make those cute sounds?
January 8, 2010 at 2:51 pm
It’s really a good deal. In a week, you’ll have twenty hats.
January 8, 2010 at 2:53 pm
I am LMAO at that picture, Helen. I believe that is the best use of furry balls I’ve seen this year.
January 8, 2010 at 2:56 pm
Unfortunately, you have to pay extra to get the scarf, which doubles as a rope you can use to hang yourself.
January 8, 2010 at 3:08 pm
This inspires me to learn how to knit.
But I want to learn how to knit something good.
January 8, 2010 at 3:12 pm
Not in the description is the original purpose of the hat, which was to identify incognito Klingons. If one approaches, the hat screeches and quakes.

Ok if it was $12.00 my inner Trekkie might consider it. Adding googly eyes to it would be a plus too

I have to say that may be the greatest photoshopping EVER. I think someone has upgraded to a level 6.
January 8, 2010 at 3:31 pm
Btw, did anyone catch the “convo” about “Handy Wipe” on Twitter? Here’s an excerpt worthy of archival:

@ #39, nice work! I’m always amused by people who are so destroyed by it but have to make sure everyone knows about it.
January 8, 2010 at 3:48 pm
Why does this hat make me think of the Bugs Bunny episode where he asks Elmer Fudd “One lump or two?” and proceeds to beat him with a hammer???

make sure not to feed this hat or get it wet after midnight

$200 smackeroonis for the “designer” hat. *snort*
I live in a tiny rural community. I think I shall knit a hat like this (my mom has the pom pom device in her knitting stash) and wear it to the Feed-and-Seed to pick up rabbit chow.
January 8, 2010 at 5:37 pm
I can’t freakin’ stand it when people throw around the words’ couture’ and ‘avant garde’ on things that are clearly not stylish nor fashionable.
Personally I want to rip that hat apart and throw the pom poms around just to watch my cat chase them.
Helen, your Star Trek pic made my day.
January 8, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Having read others comments I would like to add that the DVF version looks just as fucking stupid.

January 8, 2010 at 7:07 pm
her expression is priceless
January 8, 2010 at 7:08 pm
Helen, I think this one needs a pie chart
January 8, 2010 at 7:30 pm
Goodness, gracious great balls attire!
January 8, 2010 at 7:39 pm
Looks like the dingle berries we use to cut off my sheepdog’s ass…
January 8, 2010 at 7:42 pm
actually..the DVF hats make this one look pretty tame…

So a priest, a Pollock, and a lady walk into a bar with furry balls on their heads… eh, I got nothing.
My child would cry and run the other way if someone came near her in this hat.
January 8, 2010 at 9:22 pm
HAT OF POMPOM
*said in big booming godlike voice*
(and that’s def level 6)
January 8, 2010 at 9:34 pm
Here “scarf” is like the sunshine knot scarf without the knots and taken to the extreme. Where the sunshine scarf left off, this one took over.
http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=32282319
I think the hat needs at least 19 pompoms. 13 just isn’t enough. Look how bare the back looks.
