I take one look at this and to me it screams: ANTISEMITIC!
Sorry but a pic wearing a yamika in itself is bad. This should be viewed in a room.
In fact, I was told by my art teachers.. if you want to make something people will like, never involve religion. You put a yamika on any animal and you’ll still get symbolism out the ying yang. But a pig?? Come on..
#8 Badcrafter- I can see it now… “This is a rare piece, from the early part of the millennium. It is what we here at the show refer to as Whimsicle Fuckery…”
To answer the big question: yes, a javelina is a pig. Therefore, it is the exact opposite of kosher. Yay! Next up, the Virgin Mary gives birth to a cuttlefish.
i’m not religious at all, (celebrate Xmas but that’s it)…i still think the image is very cute and the artist is talented…with that being said, i think it is to poke humor at his own religion, obviously- kinda the way that guy did with the jesus being held at gunpoint by santa
“I think the beauty in Art is that an artist can create their own world. Whatever is important to them. Maybe Something of a Diversion from everyday life. With that being said. I paint a world depicting animals as if they were people. My wife and I have an animal sanctuary with animals that have been mostly rescued from bad situations. And it is through them that I began to realize how an animal can be scene as depicted in my work.”
In reading lulunjay’s profile he states that he paints “a world depicting animals as if they were people.” so I don’t find this anti-Semitic I find it VERY VERY FREAKING WIERD but not offensive (at least in a religious way). Isn’t one of the great things about freedom of religion the freedom to also express one’s views and interpretations of said religion?
I’m curious as to what you find anti-Semitic about this painting. Is it just that it’s a pig? I tend to think of that as ironic rather than anti-Semitic.
On second thought I’m not misguided…his prints are fantastic and I predict this added exposure on Regretsy will become his Christmas/Hanukkah bonus. On his behalf and that of his animals, thanks Helen.
#31- I agree javelinas should not have matches. They can be scary when wild!
So, here’s my two cents about miniature donkey costumes, in javelinas depicted doing human things, e tc. I also am active in animal rescue. My particular animal of choice is basset hounds; I myself own four of them, and have fostered 50+ others over the years,a nd been on the baord of a couple fo basset hound rescue groups. I LOVE bassets. So if any of these people made paintings with a Basset Hound licking an…
..cream cone, or dressing for a wedding a la Stinky Jimmy… I might well buy it. You should see some of the basset hound-related art and collectibles I have at my house! And.. when you’re ready for a new pet, dont’ buy! Adopt from a shelter or rescue!
Like the wacky Jew javelina, loved the donkeys. It’s the totally endearing whacky stuff that’s my favorite on Regretsy.
I’ve only been to a place once that had Javelinas, AZ, and I saw a bunch on a golf course. A friend looked at my snapshots and was like “It’s like they are ugly but they don’t know they are ugly, which is cute”
Again, the candles are lit from right to left!!!! Doesn’t the admin read any of the comments? #10, it’s a YIN yang. #42, the middle candle is the ninth one at the end of the eight which is used each night to light the other candles (the following internet shouting is not directed at you #42) FROM RIGHT TO LEFT!!!!!!

Is that a pig?
December 14, 2009 at 4:10 pm
I’m 99% sure that this is NOT kosher.
December 14, 2009 at 4:10 pm
I like how the artist tells us he’s using “epson” paper and ink. Very detailed.
Now back to the question… IS that a pig?
December 14, 2009 at 4:11 pm
How very cool, another kind soul who rescues animals. Not sure why he chose to paint a Jew-velina, but oh well, together we warm.
December 14, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Oy vey. Is that animal porcine?
December 14, 2009 at 4:14 pm
nothing screams “JEW” louder than a potbellied anteater.
December 14, 2009 at 4:15 pm
At least its not eating a mouse.
December 14, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Wow. This may be around for 100 to 200 years. I can see it now, on a 2109 episode of Antiques Roadshow…
December 14, 2009 at 4:19 pm
lol. His last name is “Schmetz”.
My grandmother is turning in her grave for me laughing at that.

Is a Javelina a lady Javelin?

Oh sorry, it may also be hippopotami:

A javalina is a peccary.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javalina
A peccary is not kosher.
http://hearoyisrael.net/kosher/proscribedlist.html
But I know a pig collector who’ll love it. Linking!
December 14, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Okay, it’s related to a pig: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peccary
oh. Sorry Myrab.

I’m thinking perhaps the populations who know what a javelina is and those who know what a yarmulke is, do not overlap.
December 14, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Instead of, “Does a bear shit in the woods?”, I’m going to start using, “Does a javelina light the menorah?”
December 14, 2009 at 4:43 pm

now i like the seller even more…

#10 CrimsonHoohah: FYI – yarmulke not yamika.

THE HALF JEW ADMIN DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE MENORAH OR THE CLOVEN JAVELINA
But you will not be disappointed with the aroma from my candle
December 14, 2009 at 4:59 pm
Call me crazy (or misguided) but I like these pictures…they’d make festive notecards. And for once the price is right.
December 14, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Do be sure to enjoy his website jayschmetzart.com . His work is fun and makes me smile.
I love the Javelina lighting the menorah! We could all use to laugh at ourselves a little bit more and stop being so sensitive!
And yes, a javelina does light the menorah … sometimes
December 14, 2009 at 5:04 pm
I like it, and don’t think it’s offensive at all…peccary or no peccary, I think it’s pretty cute.
I also really like the one of the poodle, delicately licking her tasty ice cream cone* : http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vl_other_1&listing_id=14261441
* Not a euphemism for cooter.

If I had space in my apartment for art, I would definitely buy this! It’s cute, well done, and I don’t find it offensive, just cheeky.

I realize the artist rescues animals and all, but letting them play with fire and skateboard and drink scalding beverages too?
December 14, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Javelinas roam the streets here in AZ. They are scary, scary animals and should not be allowed to have matches
December 14, 2009 at 6:06 pm
So, was Hanakkuah Javelina easier to misspell than Collard Peccary Christmas? Must be one whimsicle Jew.
December 14, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Maybe it should be called a jewvalina?

This reminds me that on the first night of Hanukkah, Trader Joe’s was sampling ham. I stuck with the raspberry tart and coffee samples.
December 14, 2009 at 10:10 pm
OK, again, I kind of dig this.
But isn’t there a candle missing in the middle?
and PS- Javelinas are not pigs. So, much like the candle-tastrophe from last night, it is a kosher item.
December 15, 2009 at 1:12 am
@ #41 whoanellee
I think Javelina is holding the eighth to light the other candles.
That pig’s got great fine motor skills.
