I don’t know. I think Hellen Killer got it right.
But I think this artist has some interesting things. I like the concept of painting an action or emotional face but some turn out odd looking.
This looks like a character taken directly from movies like A Scanner Darkly. I think there have been a few other films like it where it was shot in live action but animated later on.
So the artist is doing a series of “Manga” (Japanese serial comic-books) style paintings based on the movies of Michael Mann, so Helen made the Pacino painting into a Yu-gi-oh anime picture – which is sort of like Manga, but animated and the drawing is more simplistic…
Did I follow that very complicated joke correctly… or is there just a misspelling on the listing I missed?
someone has booze? i wish i were drunk looking at this.. hmm i have a little absinthe left over.. maybe the googly eyed man would be funnier if i finished the bottle.
I’m with #32 a few of the descriptions I read were pretty funny, as was the bio/profile. Did not recognise most of the people portraited until I read the description though…
@#17: if theblackapple had painted this, then the brushstrokes would be really crappy and poorly applied… the eyes would probably still be as wide, but the actual technique would be crap.
Why would I want a Manga Pacino? Seriously? I saw Carlito’s Way (which, yes, is my only Pacino reference)… Why would I want to see Pacino all doe-eyed?
I am getting behind #4, #13, and #15 in the clue queue. I nominate #16 to be our team captain. I’ll provide the walkers and denture cream. Drinking? Blacking out!
For some strange, twisted reason, I want nothing more than for Rob Lowe to be in a Michael Mann movie, just so he has a chance of being painted like this.

November 14, 2009 at 4:38 pm
Why? what possible reason could anyone have for painting something this demented?
November 14, 2009 at 4:47 pm
This is what the Reborn artists are basing their work on.
November 14, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Is this what they call a ‘superglue smile’?

November 14, 2009 at 5:57 pm
Just because you buy the freakin How To Draw Manga book, does not an artist make.

November 14, 2009 at 7:36 pm
or maybe thats the mans bitter beer face???
November 14, 2009 at 8:43 pm
This is nowhere near as regrettable as some of the other recent posts here.
November 14, 2009 at 8:43 pm
(I mean the stuff featured in recent posts…)
November 14, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Not a bitter beer face, but a ‘can I make the mail in time’ face.
November 14, 2009 at 8:55 pm
*Hands everyone a stiff drink*
Makes more sense when drunk off yer arse!! ;P
November 14, 2009 at 10:11 pm
I’m not sure I get the ‘regretsy’ part of this one. Is it odd that there are no female portraits in this guy’s series?
November 14, 2009 at 10:14 pm
omg… the captions on some of his other paintings are priceless…
November 14, 2009 at 10:36 pm
I really like the descriptions on all of his paintings. Very funny.
November 14, 2009 at 11:44 pm

oops I meant ‘portrayed’ not ‘portraited’!

Isn’t that “Manga” shit over yet?
November 15, 2009 at 11:04 am
I used to make that face every morning, then I added more fiber to my diet.
November 15, 2009 at 11:40 am
I’m disappointed that there are not Miami Vice paintings in his shop. I guess not all Michael Mann movies are created equal.
November 15, 2009 at 1:02 pm
I’m working on a group of color field paintings based on 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I call my series John Hues.
November 15, 2009 at 1:30 pm
I’m also working on on Quentin Tarentella, an Italian folk dance based on the film Pulp Fiction.
November 15, 2009 at 1:32 pm
I hope it will be as successful as your Huey Lewis It’s Hip To Be Square Supermatist series.
November 15, 2009 at 1:34 pm
#39: me too, but was glad he did 4 from Manhunter. I would consider buying a Manga Francis Dollarhyde piece if he offered one.
November 15, 2009 at 1:38 pm
#42: HAHA!
November 15, 2009 at 1:38 pm
#42 to #40, d’oh!
November 15, 2009 at 1:38 pm
oh, nevermind
November 15, 2009 at 1:58 pm
#39 & #43: Either you missed his second page or FatEyes is reading this blog.
November 15, 2009 at 4:02 pm
I am in love with FatEyes. Mostly because of the descriptions.
November 15, 2009 at 4:55 pm
I hate anime.
November 15, 2009 at 6:01 pm
@#49: You said it all, again, and in three words. We’re not worthy. You rock.
November 15, 2009 at 7:44 pm
He does write great descriptions — I also like his profile, and he can actually paint
I am now sorry I compared his work to that of theblackapple.
November 15, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Am I the only person who thinks this looks more like Kevin Nealon than Al Pacino??
November 15, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Oddly I don’t really mind this painting. But I don’t know who this person is either.
November 15, 2009 at 11:04 pm
Really ’cause the descriptions I read made me ready for bed. Seriously I am going to sleep now. Goddamn friggin anime.
November 16, 2009 at 7:04 am
Looks like Al Pacino.
November 16, 2009 at 7:05 am
Someone is really obsessed with Italian actors.
November 16, 2009 at 10:30 am
I think the Regretsy here is that the artist is painting a series based off the movies of Michael Mann. #39 – #42 cracked me up! LOL
November 17, 2009 at 12:04 am
John Hues…. holy carp!
